My new centerpiece, some history and thanks to board members who helped

Guys,

I wanted to share the new centerpiece to my collection and give a little history on it. Over the last 5 years or so my primary focus (although I do tend to wander at times) has been collecting the Post WWII HOFer rookie cards in PSA. I have bought and sold many of them during this time frame trying to stay within my budget. I would buy cards under $50 each month, and after obtaining all of the cards in that price range, I would sell some to get one of the more expensive cards. Last year I sold the lionshare of this part of my collection and was able to pick up the most expensive card in the set, the Mick's rookie. I got a psa 2 at the National. I am not a high end collector, as most of my cards are psa 4-9. Anyway, I have just not been completely satisfied with that card as the centerpiece of my collection, and I wanted to upgrade. So I sold it, and recently went through my 70's sets, had cards graded and sold many of them. I want to thank the people on the boards (I know at least 4) who bought cards of mine that I recently put on ebay, and I want to share the new centerpiece of my collection. It fits in well with my other cards, but has MUCH better eye appeal than my psa 2 did. Sorry about the long post, and thanks for reading.

Great card! That is about as good as centering gets for that card. As with the Mays 51B, just brutally hard to locate one with nice centering. In addition, it's free of the vertical print line issue that plagues many examples. People search for quite some time and still cannot locate as nice a copy, even in 5s and 6s.

I'm also a big fan of the huge borders on that card; many a sharper-looking 51B Mick has been trimmed.

Thanks for the positive comments guys, and reading the post.

@DM23HOF - I agree. The psa 2 that I had, didn't have the veritcal line but it was way too oc for me, and it had some sort of a water stain that bothered me. I kept looking at psa 2-5 examples but couldn't find one that I was happy with, and I went pretty strong after this one. Most of the Mantles and May's from that year that are graded under psa 4 are o/c have that print line or a big crease. I might have over paid a little bit for a psa 4 but I decided to buy the card, and not the grade.

Congratulations. That is a beautiful card. I have been eyeing that card for quite a while and hope to land it in similar condition (4 or 5). It is his true RC and I think the action shot is better than the more iconic 52 Topps shot. I prefer the 51 to the 52 Topps in terms of aesthetics so it doesn't hurt that it is lighter on the wallet too. Can't wait to land mine. Hopefully it will be as nice as yours!

You'd be surprised at what the card is trading hands for in private sales. Most of the examples being moved through ebay are not pretty. The cards with eye appeal that are listed on ebay get dealt off line very shortly after listing. So the VCP data doesn't tell close to the whole current story for this card. Bet you actually did very well in terms of price.

Nice card! I prefer the aesthetics of the early 50s Bowmans over anything Topps did. Why is the Topps card worth more?

As I said to Jim, it's great to see a collector land the one card they've always coveted but never thought they'd own. I experienced that high recently and am happy for anybody who does. Congrats on landing a really stellar card!

    Congratulations!
As a collector who collects the same HOF set, I know how difficult it can be. I've been eyeing the 51 Mantle and Mays and hoping to find one soon. The beauty of looking for a nicely centered one is it gives me more time to save more money.
I really wish I was able to get the AUTH one that one of the board members recently sold on ebay, but that card was not on my radar at the time. If if ever came up for sale again, I would to have the chance to get it.
