<< <i>Depends where you look really. In Arizona or Mississippi it is daunting. In California not exactly. There is a big difference between having an opinion about something and asking someone to stay away from an entire race of people because their presence disgusts you. >>

While Sterling's remarks set a new standard for despicable, I suspect that the bar to bounce an NBA owner is much lower. I suspect that a single utterance of a given word or two would result in a similar fate. Trying to buy a franchise with any remnant of racism or misogyny in ones history would be impossible.

If you think that the Billionaires of the pristine State of California are above that.....you are most certainly incorrect.

Indeed nobody stopped Sterling from saying what he thinks/feels...and he can continue to do so if he so chooses. But all those other guys (media, players, coaches, fans, etc) have that SAME right to free speech and right to free wallet (that is those who don't like his racism can choose not to go to games or play/coach/work for him) and that's what a lot of people tend to forget.

If this hasn't been mentioned already, the commish announced that Sterling has been banned for life. Just like Pete Rose's banishment 25 years prior (though that occurred in August), it is indeed a sad end to a sorry episode.

Given his age/wealth neither will affect him greatly or in the least. And not to mention the tidy profit the eventual sale of the team will net for him/his heirs.

I just listened to the extended 15-minute version of the conversation between Clippers owner Donald Sterling and his then-girlfriend V. Stiviano. They BOTH sound like a**holes!

Heh heh...now Oprah wants to buy the team. When the bidding ends at $1 Billion plus,, they will really show that bum a lesson!
  • My guess is that Sterling will bring a lawsuit against the girl because of California's "two-way" law.

Then it remains to be seen if he has legal grounds to sue the NBA after California makes it's decision.

  • Oops. Forgot to add this..................In California, you can't record a conversation without the knowledge or consent of both parties. The recording featuring Sterling and V. Stiviano may be the result of a crime

He cannot sue the NBA. That is part of the league constitution that all owners agree to abide by once they purchase a team. Part of that agreement stipulates that an owner cannot sue the league and that any dispute must be settled by an arbitrator.

But if the league fined him based on something that was illegal, then I'm guessing there will be a settlement between Sterling and the NBA.
If a settlement can't be reached, then I'm guessing Sterling will take his billions and take this to the Supreme Court.

He's been taking a lot of flack for something that was done illegally to him. My guess is that he's not going to go down without a fight.

There has been no mention of the conversation being obtained illegally, and Sterling didn't raise that issue when he was grilled by Adam Silver.

The evidence would only be invalidated in a court of law, and probably only in a criminal case. And now that the recording is out on the 'net everywhere we can't exactly unring the bell now, you know?

per another "story", it seems both Sterling and Stiviano agreed to be recorded and this conversation occurred last September.

this may also be the reason Sterling admitted as much to Adam Silver or whatever NBA reps interrogated him.

No consent is required from both parties, only a warrant authorizing the recording. That rule only applies to criminal cases. This is not a criminal case.

I find it ironic but far from surprising that Al Sharpton is leading the "offended" crowd in wanting to not only strip this guy of his team but also his real estate holdings! This from Al who has his own litany of racist tirades under his belt. Everyone knew who and what this guy was long before this, and now they're jumping all over this one statement when there were opportunities, LEGIT ones, to call this guy out long before now. But the reality is that the NAACP liked those checks he was writing, and the NBA/coaches/players liked those checks and income too, so they just looked the other way. Yeah, the guy's a sleaze of the highest caliber, but at least he wasn't hypocritical.

No one who's heard that recording believes that for a second. It's patently obvious this guy had no clue he was being recorded.

Just another side note to this story. I'm sorry if anyone gets offended by it. It's not racial profiling, it's just what I've learned.

Historically the race that Sterling offended is statistically proven to be the worse renters of apartments compared to other cultures.
Unfortunately in our society they are most likely to lose jobs, and thus, can not pay rent.
It is what it is. No one is proud of it, or likes it, but it is the truth.

P.S. If this guy is a true racist, then I hope he gets what's coming to him.

I wouldn't label him a racist though just because he (as a businessman) didn't want to rent to that particular race.

Did you forget the part about Sterling saying he didn't want black people coming to his games?

It will be very interesting to see what the future consequences of the NBA's punishment of Sterling (for his recorded offensive statements) will be. Particularly if the NBA successfully forces a sale of the Clippers in order to deprive Sterling of his ownership of the team. (Likewise it will be interesting to see if a legal dispute is mounted by Sterling and if part of same include looking into the background of the other 29 owners, of the NBA past and present officials, and of past and present NBA players and coaches and managements to see if any of them have ever made statements similar to those made by Sterling and if so, what punishment was imposed upon them).

If the NBA's punishment is eventually upheld, then it would appropriate that the precedent it sets will be uniformly applied to future (and past?) incidents of ANYONE making offensive statements or conduct (by word, symbol, tweet, video, gesture or otherwise). Might as well extend things to sexist, homophobic and other such categories.

Thus if an NBA owner, manager, player (including Star Player), fan (including Entertainment, Sports, Music, Media, Politician, Business, etc. megastars), vendor, security all the way down to janitor makes, says or does anything to offend anyone, the NBA should impose a similar punishment.

This would include banning (for life) the next super star who does drugs, who assaults women (i.e. Kobe) or who makes an offensive statement (i.e Barkley when he said he hates white people; or Shaq when he talks about "crackas").

In fact, if the NBA (and the NFL, MLB and the NHL) truly stood for equality, then these leagues should adopt, immediately, affirmative action plans which insure that the players in the leagues are truly a representative cross section of society.

No longer should the NBA be allowed to have the NBA team rosters filled with men who are, on average 6"7" tall and who are predominantly black and foreign born non blacks. A certain percentage of spots on NBA rosters must be set aside for 5"6" players who are native born whites, hispanics, asians, and native americans (even if these persons do not have the ability to compete with the non affirmative action players in the league).

The NFL should have a certain amount of team roster spots set aside for players who are not 330 lbs, 6"7" tall, who cannot bench press a building and who cannot run a 4.5 40.

NHL team rosters should have spots set aside for people who have never ice skated before, particularly non white players.

MLB should set aside roster spots for players who do not have the ability to ever hit any ball thrown by an MLB pitcher and for players (pitchers) who can not throw a ball more than 20 miles per hour.

Females should be allowed on these rosters, as should males be allowed on the rosters of WMBA teams.

Isn't equality the most important thing here (including both equal opportunity and equal outcome, regardless of unequal ability and unequal input)? If everything is truly equal, then we truly have fairness for all (even if everyone is equally miserable).

Spoken like a complete racist fool in denial.

Refusing to rent to people of a particular race? That's racist.

Generalizations about a group of people "most likely to lose jobs" because of their race? That's racist.

    Defending racist actions? That's racist.

So if he is a true racist and gets what's coming to him what would that be? An invite to dinner and a lynching party courtesy of Fitz?

Baseball and 1985 were right on. Fitz is a racist troll with a racist agenda. If it defends racism, denies racism and makes racist generalizations it is a racist.

If the jobless rate among African Americans is 12.6% (this number was pulled from the article you linked), then close to 88% are employed. So your argument that blacks are not good risks as tenants is based on the 12.6% who aren't working instead of the 87.4% who are. Sounds logical to me.
  • PowderedH2OPowderedH2O Posts: 2,443 ✭✭
With that jobless rate at 11 or 12 or 13%... it makes no difference. If you qualify the renters in your apartments to have proof of income, then you avoid this issue. Also, you would avoid renting to white folks that don't have jobs either. And, as the previous poster said, those aren't the people you are mostly dealing with - it is the other 87-88%. To not do business with minorities is just economically foolish. African-American, Asian, Hispanic, White, Indian... the money all spends the same.
