Conclusion...of the PWCC 1971 topps PSA 9 auction....

Hey guys,
We can break radio silence. Started out a little crazy. Obviously at least 2 guys fighting it out. $4-500 for pop 7,8's that averaged $130. But overall reasonable prices across the board. A few good buys but the seller did really well. Brooks went for $6k with a pop of 7 or nine. Yet Bench went for 3k with a 5 pop. I think thats a decent price.

eBay locked me out for 25 minutes. And of course their customer service predicted wait time of 7 minutes was almost 20. Ugh. But saved me some money.

Anyone get anything good? Happy with results, thoughts?

I went to pull up the ended auctions but I can't seem to get them to show up. Seems like there is often a multi-hour delay before completed auctions show up. Hopefully everyone got the cards they were targeting.

I wanted the Stargell but out of my price range. Good candidate for a bump to a 10.

  • I was following a bunch but my bids were not in in time. I made an offline pickup on some long sought rookies though so not to pissed I missed out on these.

I grabbed a couple of Angels 9 and 8 cards and the Bob Grich rookie. Definitely overpaid a bit for it, but it's a beauty!

  • Picked up the Banks PSA 9. I was the underbidder on this card when Henry bought it last August. I wasn't going to miss out on it a second time.
Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all "right-thinking" people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.

This is known as “bad luck.”

I had 4 cards targeted to aggressively chase. I won 2 and lost 2.

I was aggressive on the Morgan and won it. An undervalued card for a pop 5 and a truly under appreciated superstar. The card itself is a beautiful 9

I also won the Willie Mays. I think it's pop 11? I've never seen a 9 pop up. Mays collectors are pretty intense and I don't see many of them selling 9's so who knows when I would see one. Gorgeous 9 too

I was the 2nd bidder on the Frank and Brooks Robinson, narrowly missed both. Frank is undervalued and underappreciated as well IMO.
Whoever won those, congrats! Are they on these boards?

Regarding the Bench I think many of is thought it would go higher. I don't think it's one of the higher end 9's in the bunch, maybe that's why. Ernie Banks at pop 3 is a great buy. Such a tough card.
Carew went for what I thought. Consistent card. Blyleven was a tad higher than I thought but it's a screamer beautiful 9 worthy of a review.

So overall very happy with what I won though I really wanted the Brooks. Anyone here have it PM me lol.

I won the Munson and am really excited about it. To me, it is a very strong 8 and I knew it would go for well above VCP. That was an understatement. sheesh.

The final selling prices can now be viewed on EBAY completed listings.

WOW that Brooks Robinson jumped on the major snipes. A gap of $2,700 between the under bidder and the third bidder.

Edit: A few of the higher priced cards have yet to post so it may be a few hours until all of the completed sales post. I don't see the Banks and Mays yet.

Not bad on brooks. Henry got it for just 3500

  • What an amazing set of cards that must have been a blast to put together. I won a great selection of Dodgers cards which should hopefully push me the #1 on the Dodgers registry for '71. I've been crazy for the '75 set overall and trying to complete high grade Dodgers sets for the decade, but 1971 would be the crown jewel of '70's sets if I could build in high grade.

Justinsshoebox- I was one of the under bidders on the Grich. If you're ever looking to sell, let me know.
    I collect Cal Ripken cards, T206, E95, E210, R319.

Although it wasn't a PSA 9, the final bid on the PSA 8 Munson was a new record for that card in that grade ($2225!), although it was a very strong PSA 8. Such a great card!

edit: ahh, now I see Dan's post. Congrats, Dan! You might look back on this years from now and consider that a bargain. A fantastic addition to an already great collection!

Were there any surprises to the downside from the auction?

Now watch the strong 7.5s and even 7s of the Munson move up. There is a HUGE gap now between the 7.5s and the 8s. The market has a way of closing that gap very quickly. Glad I picked up my 7.5 for next to nothing years ago.

Outbid on the Mays. I think that was a PSA 11! But I can't find it now.

  • The major snipe. it b Robinson....one I was watching went from 2-3k to 6k in the last 10seconds! Gee whiz. Someone almost got a great deal.

That would hurt thinking it's urs for cheap with 15 sec to go.

I think the bench and banks were good deals. If in an AH may have gotten more...dt more time to think about it.

Got one star more for sentimental reasons. I sold mine in college. And remember a dealer trying to sell one to me and my friend with OBVIOUS sharpie touch ups...more like obv coloring the entire border. Unfort, of the five local dealers, not one was honest. Differed only in degrees. But that's another thread.
  • Mays was a pop 12 last time I looked. Can't give u the price, got locked out of that one.

Surprises? I don't think many. It started out strong and aggressive. Then constant for 6 hours! Stars went for ave to above. I got some very low pops for very low amounts. And some high pops for the lowest I've ever seen. Surprised me because I wasnt that interested. Just threw in some bids. Don't think any stars went for below average price.

I think around 348 PSA 9s sold. How is that taxed? Long term capital gains, documentation? Hmmm.

  • No big deal but sorry if I was wrong about the mays being pop of 11 or 12. I was going by PWCC listing it as a 12. No biggie.

Thanks for the link. That is the best 1971 Mays I have ever seen. If PSA went to 11 ...

Congratulations to Henry and the new owners of his incredible 1971s. I was really impressed with the quality of the cards and it's hard to put a price on such rarities. It's great to see some of the good guys on these forums pick some of them up.
