Broke a cardinal rule over the weekend...

I set up at my local show this weekend. Did great, but I broke a cardinal rule at the show. I have two rules. 1. I don't buy when I'm selling at a show. I've only broken this once because my son wanted a Jay Bruce auto jersey for his room and OneFastTalon was the one selling it.

2. Don't sell the stuff you put in your case to attract people to the table. So I put out some stuff I had no intention of selling, i.e. Ruth relic, Wagner relic, etc. Had a guy come to the table and offered me $150 for my Ruth relic which was quite a bit more than I paid for it. I almost said no, but then I went through with it. Kicking myself all morning, till I got home.

I was able to repurchase my card on eBay AND I got a Gehrig relic as well all for $150. Not bad, not bad.

Which begs one to ask the question, how are there still small, local shows? Congrats on your profit though

They are a lot fewer, but they are out there and well attended. I go to one local here in Mansfield MA. They run them about 1-2 times/month. Always well attended.

Chris, congrats on the upgrade! We had family obligations, so I was not able to attend this show or the Chicago show this time around. Hope to see you soon at the Fishers show.

When is the next Fishers show? It's only a few minutes from my house but for some reason I can never remember it!

Just wondering why you wouldn't buy at a show. I know a lot of dealers that go to shows almost primarily for the opportunity to buy, plus anyone approaching for a sale understands that as a dealer you are going to resell thus the $'s offered to dealers are often lower than retail....

Yeah, I used to not to. Then I saw another seller doing it one time and he said a lot of people come by to look and then find something that they do want to buy. It's worked for me before, so I just go with it.

Regarding why I don't buy at shows. It's just a personal preference for me. I have nothing against others doing it, but one of the main reasons I'm there is to make money, not spend it. I don't always set up at this show. Sometimes I go just to buy.

Not to be a pest, but if someone approached you with a great deal and while you had to put some $ on the line on that day knowing you could flip it for a profit, why wouldn't you be open to making $ down the line?

I don't think you're being a pest, but I typically don't play "what if". I typically don't have time to barter deals because I'm usually selling. I rarely have someone come to my table to trade, although this time I did.

I just don't buy at shows. Just a rule I set out from the beginning when I started 10 years ago.
