question about ebay purchase

Yesterday, I purchased a card on Ebay and immediately contacted the seller to tell him I will be paying for the card first thing Monday, Tuesday at the latest as my bank is a credit union and isn't open on weekends. Today I get a message from him saying "Sorry due to payment, the card is no longer available, needs to be prompt payment." This was NOT stated anywhere in the item details. Now he listed the card on ebay for almost three times as much as what I paid for it.
So my question is does the buyer have any obligation to still sell the card to me? Isn't there a grace period where I have to pay? Can he do this?
I should note that I have 100% positive feedback as a buyer and in most cases pay immediately.
any help would be appreciated.

No one can make him sell it to you, but you'll at least be able to leave him a neg if he doesn't.
Seems you may have sent up a red flag for the seller or at least given him an out for an item he feels may have sold at too low of a price.
Regardless, I would send timely payment (if that means Monday or Tuesday at the latest - which appears to be the next business day) and expect delivery. The worst case scenario is that he fails to send, you file and "item not received," get a refund and leave a negative.
<< <i>He can't open an unpaid item case for 48 hours after the auction ended. So, if you can pay within 48 hours, maybe he'll send you the card.

Is it not 96 hours?
Not a dumb question at all.
<< <i>Dumb question maybe, but in the year 2014, why does someone's bank or credit union need to be open in order to be able to pay for something online? >>
I'm assuming that he needs to make a deposit.

I think it used to be, but it's 48 hours now.
"When a buyer wins an item or uses Buy It Now to purchase an item, the buyer is obligated to complete the purchase by sending full payment to the seller. If a buyer doesn't pay within 2 days, a seller can open an unpaid item case in the Resolution Center. If the buyer still doesn't pay or reach some other agreement with the seller, eBay may record the unpaid item on the buyer's account."

Are Saturday and Sunday considered business days according to this policy? Usually they are not, but in the new online world I don't know.

I was under the impression that buyers had 7days (still hoping someone will enlighten me on whether weekends are considered "days") to pay for an item. On "Buy it Nows" you can ask for/demand immediate payment, but what does "immediate" mean? Again, if ebay does not consider weekends business days, Monday is the earliest he could expect you to be required to pay. In that case he certainly should not be allowed to list it while waiting for your payment.
Seems to me that this seller is playing games, he certainly should honor the sale. Especially if he didn't require immediate payment and he has relisted it within ONE DAY. In this situation ebay should compel him to sell you the card (I know, there is no way to make him do this) and if I were you, I would go ahead and pay for it, and if he refuses to sell it to you, I would hit him with a negative.
Please let us know if it was a buy it now. I would also like to know who the seller is as I don't like to do business with F#$ktards. If you don't want to post his name please PM me.
I won it yesterday morning around 7:30 am, they messaged me this morning (about 24 hours after I won the card), saying the card was not available anymore (which was a lie) due to payment.
I had to deposit money into my credit union on Monday and then would complete the checkout. Nowhere on the item details did this seller state "immediate payment only."
I thought I was doing the right thing by informing the seller that I would pay first thing Monday, as I would want someone to do the same with me if they didn't pay immediately. I cannot believe that people would be afraid of someone keeping the lines of communication open by telling them, hey I'll pay first thing on such and such date. UNREAL. I have done this a few times in the past and always got a "no problem, thanks for the communication" response.
In any event, I left negative feedback and will never purchase anything from this seller again.

Yes, I won an item on a Friday evening recently and had an unpaid item case waiting for me when I got home Sunday evening.

So an auction win on Saturday suddenly becomes no longer available on Sunday...even if he went through proper Ebay channels with filing a non-payment, he couldn't file the non-payment until Monday, correct?

+1. I wonder if I might have encountered the same seller? I won one item from a seller in Finland on a Friday night a few weeks ago. After winning, I emailed to say that I was interested in another of his auction items ending 2 days later and asked if I might wait until that auction ended so if I won I could have combined shipping. He said yes that would be fine to wait, and then the Sunday 2 days after winning the first auction he still opened an unpaid item case. I wrote back about being confused as to why he'd have done that since it seemed to contradict what we had established over email, and he said he just wanted to make sure he was paid. I think it is possible that something was lost in translation between English and Finnish, but either way, I then decided not to win the 2nd item as I wasn't happy with his actions up to that point.
As long as you're going to pay within the time you are allotted, no need to send a note.
<< <i>Sometimes, communication can be dangerous. If immediate payment was not required and you planned on paying within several days, I'm not sure why you would contact the seller to tell them that you had to wait several days and create a potential of concern. Personally, I pay immediately upon closing of the auction, but as a seller, I understand that sometimes buyers take several days to pay. However, if I have a buyer contact me AFTER the auction and they present a scenario about "why there will be a delay," I get more nervous about payment than if nothing were mentioned.

The Finns are a notoriously devious people.
Ordinarily I would not have written to the seller and instead just paid a couple days later, but in that case I wanted to establish an agreement on combined shipping rate before choosing whether to bid on the second item since combined shipping discounts were not described one way or another in his listings.
