I'd like to get one since that was the year I was born, but will probably just have to settle for never getting one based on the current unopened boom. Prolly shoulda jumped on this two years ago and not one year ago.
I agree something is not right here. If there was ever an example of someone being bid up to their max, this is it. Take out 472's 11 bids after 479's MONSTER MAX BID and this pack tops out 1 bid over $42.57. +1 for seller never gets paid.

That's really not how it works. If those two people didn't bid, others may have bid in their place.
$300 does seem very high, but I don't see any other PSA 9s on ebay.
1 of only 2, none higher with no immediate future possibilities due to new PSA grading standards, and a couple guys trying to build a graded Registry set.
What are the new pack grading changes? I've not kept up-to-date on them. Seems like someone mentioned they are only grading wax if the gum is stuck to the card/wrapper. Is this correct?
Thanks,
David (LD_Ferg)

Hey David, you summed it up big picture. Here is a link to the thread Tim started which goes into more detail.
That price is very legitimate and the guy who is probably going to win it hasn't even bid yet.

<< <i>Great. Now Fritsch is going to ask $11,000.00 for his 1981 topps boxes!! Ughh >>
LOL, if there were 36 PSA 9s of this pack (instead of 2), it would be nowhere near $300...more like $30 (if that).

The power of the set registry! The same reason a Mint 9 75 mini Claudell Washington card would command 2K.

If this ends up selling I am busting my case of 81's.
I know I can find at least 4 boxes worth, out of the 20 boxes, where the gum is stuck to the card and not broken. If I can't I'll experiment with a few 81 or 87 or 88 packs until they stick!
I truly hope the seller gets these sales. He is one smart cookie, to send in what most consider junk wax, and realize these prices.
There have only been 18 packs total graded of 81's. Why? Probably because most people, up to this point, didn't see any real value in grading a $3 pack. Don't believe for a second that these boxes/cases are anything like pre 80 product. Every show you go to you can still find boxes of 81, 82, 83, 84, 85...
While the Registry is a powerful drug, buying any post 80 pack at these prices is just crazy. No offense meant towards the seller, (Hell I hope they do sell at these prices I have a basement full of this stuff lol), he is just the first person smart enough to go after these buyers.
With 11% of the only 28 graded packs receiving a 9 I wouldn't even hazard a guess at the HUGE number, even with the new grading guidelines, that you will see in what? 5 years!
Most collectors aren't even on the unopened bandwagon yet. Not counting this board of course!
Comparing this to a 75 Claudell Washington Mini, with 140 graded with only one 9 with none higher, isn't a fair comparison where the registry is concerned. How many cases and boxes of 81's are still out there. How many Mint 75's of Claudell are out there with his print & centering issues.
If any of these post 80 packs was deserving of a nice markup it might be the 1983 Topps. 62 total graded packs with only one 9. Guess it's time for everyone to start sending in those 80's packs!
Craig, if you submit a bunch of 81 wax packs to PSA, you will kill the golden goose--as soon as there are a few more 81 PSA 9 packs, the value will plummet. The only reason this pack sold for $400 is because there are only two in existence. If there were 10, it would have sold for $40. That was my point about the registry--the pop report greatly inflates value based on the number of examples available. Why else would anyone pay 2K for a Caludell Washington card no matter how difficult it is to find in mint condition? Or any other low poip common card for that matter? I think with wax packs we may also be witnessing the effect of the new grading policy whereby PSA will no longer grade any wax pack in which the gum is loose or broken. As a collector, I shudder to think of people putting their packs in microwaves or out in the blazing sun just to melt the gum to the top card for grading, but I'm sure there will be people attempting that, if they haven't already. Definitely makes one less inclined to crack open a slabbed pack with a recent cert number to rip, as those packs will quite possibly have some damage to the cards caused by the gum.

Yeah I get that. I should have been more clear. In this space is it normal is what I was getting at. I am getting the feeling that yes it is.
This is the most explosive part of the market right now and it is fun to watch.

Billionaires too lazy to send in worthless packs and just pay the grading fees?
