Ever lose an eBay auction while going through the BIN process?

An item was listed today that I was very excited to purchase. Been looking for it for over a year. On quadruple bucks day! As I am starting the BIN process it suddenly changes to auction ended. I checked with the seller and he said it had just sold.
Has this ever happened to you? Anyone know if this is possible up until payment is actually processed? I would presume so.
This really ruined my day (and night). I don't know if I will ever see an example this nice. I'd rather not discuss the details. It was a piece of sports memorabilia.

<< <i>It happens to me all the time. During the recent quad days, it has happened more than once. You gotta remember, you're not the only one looking for a deal due to the quad bucks. I would say it has happened to me at least a few dozen times. >>
They say misery loves company, but I wasn't expecting a few dozen times worth. Man, that is horrible! I guess I don't tend to chase things that are as closely followed (I do not have any registry sets, for example).
I was on the 4 Sharp Corners website and clicked on the pay now button in my cart, and got a message telling me to remove a "sold out item".
Then I went to ebay, found the same card there, clicked buy it now, and was told that the seller had ended the item since it was no longer available
