Custom Card: 1990 Donruss #717 Frank Thomas RC

After years of wishing and hoping, I decided to take action into my own hands and design a 1990 Donruss rookie for Big Frank. I've also made variations including a reverse negative, aqueous test, and "no period INC" copyright line; currently I'm working on a blue/white test.

Just recently back from the printing company:

Time for Panini to resurrect the Donruss What If insert idea? Did they ever do that insert in baseball?

    I love it!

It looks like that's a picture of Big Frank in an MLB game? For your other 1990 cards, you might want to look for minor league photos or something from Spring Training, to make it a little more authentic.

Hey - did you actually print the card on card stock? It really does look great. I'd love to see the other variations you made, too. You should do one with the paint spatter variation, too!

    Very nice!
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

Yeah Drew, good point, and I struggled with that. I finally settled on using an image I own the rights to from August of 1990, and numbering the card 717, like a late update. Truthfully, I don't own any minor league images with rights, and I didn't want to recycle an old image, so I went with this one. Also, to my recollection, none of the 1990 Donruss cards showcase players in minor league uniforms; so we'll pretend it's airbrushed or from March spring training.

These are printed on true cardstock, semi-glass UV protected on the front. The reverse isn't UV coated, but it is more glossy than a standard Donruss card. I sent the order out to a professional printing company rather than printing them myself.

    Very nice!

But, the "1" in the card number is really setting off my OCD.

I applaud the photo choice. Not only is it a cool image, he's wearing the 1990 style road uniform.

Something like this would've been a real must own card if Donruss had issued a second series that year.

    This is incredible. Nice work!

I cant believe Topps was the only major to include him in the base set. What an oversight. Couldn't imagine what 90 UD boxes would have been going for back in the day is he was Rookie Star card no 1 as he should have been.

Please post the 90 UD custom when/if you make it.

Any chance these 90 Donruss custom cards are for sale?

Great looking what-if card! Those are always cool. I bought some 80s 'Topps' Earl Campbells from a guy on Ebay several years ago.

Ross, great work on the '90D custom. Sometimes if want a particular card we have to do it ourselves!

Ross, did you see the recent article on the 3 copies of frank thomas aqueous test that were smuggled out of donruss factory in 1990?

The guy who made those fakes didn't really pay attention to the font used in the name area.

Bob, many thanks my friend, you inspired me! I need to message you as I've located 2 more examples of the 1995 Pinnacle Pins redemption cards, Frank Thomas and Cal Ripken. Unfortunately, the seller didn't honor the Ripken sale, but I have a picture if you'd like to see it.

    -----

Craig, I did see it and posted in his thread; I originally posted a picture of an aqueous test mockup on the net in January and thought he may have gotten his inspiration from that. Turns out, he was just on the same wave length as myself.

Thanks again for all of the comments fellas; the fonts are impossible to come by without paying hundreds for the rights, I had to take standard fonts and stretch/skew them to fit as close as possible. The name on the front came from a merge of a Frank Tanana and Anthony Thomas card. All of this was done in Microsoft Paint as well.

If the '90 Donruss Thomas was real people would have been making them with the same frequency as they produce the other "real" Aqueous cards.

Thought I'd share this one...sadly the one I tested took the ink just fine, but this particular copy was part of the "extras" the printing company included for free, and seems to be more glossy than the other copies.

I'll do it again on a copy that I know won't by hydrophobic to the ink.

    But hey, it's a start.
