1978 topps

Brand new to this site, I am an avid collector of sports cards, particularly 70`s baseball and unopened material. My attention to the hobby seems to ebb and flo with an adventurous job and raising a family. But recently checked in to see what was going on and realized unopened 70`s material is know out of my price range, WOW! I thought I had a pretty extensive unopened collection till I seen some of the posts on this site, fairly inspiring. Someday I`ll post pictures of my collection. I`m kind of old school don`t know much about grading or pops in all, at some point it takes the fun out of it. Anyhow just finished putting together a beautiful nm-mt 78 topps set. But elsewhere in my closet is about 100-150 fuzzy, rounded cornered 78`s that I used to carry with me everywhere in a lunch bag and pour out to look at. This was when I could play ball with my Dad and ask him about the Johnny Bench with all its creases and the dog-eared Nolan Ryan as we watch the wretched late seventies Detroit Tigers on T.V. I love my new set but those old much handled 78`s give me far greater pleasure.

Projects:
grabbing 80`s unopened while its affordable
finishing 74T BB set

Hi and welcome. LOTS of 70's card lovers here and lot's of us love to share our collection with others who know and can appreciate it. When you have time and figure out linking to pictures, post some pics. Most of us would love to see them.

btw - I have a Dale Murphy card that I used to carry around, and was my pride and joy as a kid, that I still keep right next to some much more high end stuff in my basement, so your not the only one. It's great to have those nostalgic items that probably aren't worth that much money, but worth a lot to you.
I cannot hit curveball. Straightball I hit it very much. Curveball, bats are afraid.

Welcome to the boards! I've only been here about 3 months, but it is an absolute blast! I've thrown out some pretty tough questions (and some fairly easy ones) and they get answered every time, without fail. I have learned an absolute ton in a short time. I also know what you mean about the dog-eared cards of your youth and their sentimental value. I still have most of my first pack of cards (Donruss, from my dad) all beat to hell, but still nostalgic, along with a couple of dozen others from my earliest collecting days. I keep them in a 50 count box, right in with my most valuable stuff. i don't think most of us would be in this hobby if it weren't for the memories and passion. Again, welcome, and I look forward to hearing/seeing more about your collection.

Sorry 'bout that LarkinCollector, but I was on a much-needed sabbatical from the boards when you joined.

Welcome! I too collect 1978 Topps baseball. I have my raw set, and I'm working on a graded set. Like you, I keep, with my raw set, the old 78's I used to have as a kid. They're the ones with scotch tape on them, thumbtack holes, creases, folds, and some have my name written on back in black marker, so they could be identified as mine should they get lost. It made perfect sense when I was 7. I thought about getting all my old ones slabbed just for grins and keep them with the graded set.

78 Topps. First wax packs that were ever bought for me. I still have a really beat up Tony Perez from that pack image
  • Thanks for the welcome, its nice to finally be able to talk cards without being called a geek! I knew there would be a lot of 78 topps lovers, its a beautiful set, along with the `71 set probably my favorite of the decade. However its hard to choose I truly like the designs for the entire decade with the possible exception of the `77. I know the 72` and 75` editions are truly iconic editions I think there just a little too much for me. The 74` set is also a favorite. I`ll try to keep up but my job requires me to be out of contact for long lengths of time. I`ll also try to post some pictures when I have time. Thanks
  • Welcome! I found upon my 20+ years of being dormant in the hobby, that graded cards has enhanced the experience and brought back the joy that I had as a youth in the search for great cards. Instead of opening a pack and seeing the stud card like I did in the 80's, I wait for my poppage now for excitement. Granted, nothing can replace the initial cards (regardless of condition) that brought one into the hobby in the first place.

Im another one whose first packs were 78s so they have a special place in my heart.

I still need to compile a list of what I need and send to a friendly PM to help me with my set...you know who you are and thank you. I will hopefully get to you with a list soon.

My favorite current project is doing all the 78 HOFers signed.

    Welcome to the boards

My 1978 Topps memory is a Rod Carew that was in my collection my whole life. Being born in 1974, I had a few 1977 cards in my room and a few more 1978. For some reason, I decided to take a hole punch to the top right corner of the Carew card. Not right on the corner, but in the right edge just below the corner. I have no idea when or why I did it, but I loved that Carew card. I wish I still had it.

I'm quite a noob myself. Lots to learn just perusing the boards.
As a Detroit Tiger fan in '78 I remember getting those Burger King Tigers. Trammell, Whitaker, and Morris with their own cards was really cool! I ate a whole lotta cheeseburgers that summer!

Welcome to the boards. 1978 is also my favorite set because it's the first I collected. I still recall getting an entire box from Price Club for my birthday! Since getting back into cards, I've added several 1978 sets and all the various unopened product except a rack box. Fortunately, I have a feeling grote (Tim) will be selling me a rack box any day now!
