Hard enough to barter with Silver now...

tneigtneig Posts: 1,505 ✭✭✭
Been trying to figure out how to barter with silver right now as practice. But few and far between that would even
understand the deal. I sure don't want overpay.

I've learned the denominations now to be able to use dimes/quarters/silver ozs... etc.
There is one guy that advertises to barter on craigs but its a creapy pickers hoarding thing going on so maybe I don't want to get killed yet in this experiment.

Anyone do much bartering with PMs these days?

Buying a car locally from a private seller I gave him my best price and told him I'd toss in a 10 Oz silver bar. He jump out of his seat, thought he was getting a hell of a deal.

But on a daily basis I dont see it happening. Not enough people have a grasp on what money used to be and what the value of metals are.

I've brainwashed (joking) my plumbing guy into taking silver when his services are needed. We got to talking about it one time when he was doing some work for me and he now collects/stacks silver. So to answer your question, yes, I converted one person outside of family/friends into the bullion world.

I often pay my daughter for her chores in silver too. I always give her the choice if she prefers cash, but to my surprise she will sometimes say something like...hey Dad, I saw that (certain item) on your desk and I like it. What amount of chores do I have to do to earn that?...and we work out a deal.

As one famous comedian that I can't remember right now use to say..."Is it wrong?" LOL
To forgive is to free a prisoner, and to discover that prisoner was you.

It may be difficult now, however, if the reason we stack ever truly materializes, bartering will become much easier. Cheers, RickO

Paid for a happy hour tab and tip with a peace $ last year. Tipped a 1/2oz koala a couple weeks ago to my Ukrainian friend, gave her 2 options - cash tip or the coin - she took the coin. Everybody was happy.

One of my handyman buddies, he'll take silver.

Options are out there, just have to find them.

It's probably ok to take silver if you don't need the money right away. A $100 bill won't lose as much value overnight as a few silver eagles potentially can. And it's a PITA to convert it to cash if you have a sudden need. Of course there is always the potential hassle at tax time as well.

I like to dress up like Mad Max and practice bartering with steely glares and hot lead, but nobody seems to want to play

    my assumption...
why would one barter with silver if they deem its value worth more than paper fiat?...
why not pay with paper, as you are supposedly paying with nothing, lol...
why isnt it considered barter, when u barter paper fiat for goods and/or services?... basically same thing...

  • Short story here: Daughter owns bar/ coffee shop/pizza place in small 600 plus town. We put an ad in the small town news selling a 12.00 supreme pizza for a half dollar with a date prior to 1964. I would pay the daughter the 12 for the half and she asked me if she could quit doing it because she was swamped selling pizza's.............................

I will never understand why a small business would not want to be busy........She was selling 200 plus pizzas for three days straight and dad was getting nice franklins, Kennedy's and walkers. If I owned the business we would still be doing it. Even had folks asking if we would also take quarters and dimes....

We had fun why it lasted. Especially after silver went to 40.oo. Didn't last long but great while it did.

One would wisely barter with silver he was sure it was loosing value in dollars.

  • The only down side was that everyone in town knew I was the buyer as many folks would ask my daughter "Who in their right mind would pay X for a half dollar"....... My daughters answer was "He said he would buy a truck full " I had plenty of folks selling without the pizza after awhile.

You would be surprised how many folks 62-85 do not have a clue what things are worth and still have small little "piggy banks" laying around with Franklins, Washington quarters etc etc..... I would also always pay more than the pawn shop/motel guys and had a nice profit when silver would move just a bit. As I also told my kids "Don't get greedy, if you can make 10-15 percent in 2-3 months move it and let the next guy make a little... The bad part was the banks would turn around and lend money to the kids at 18-24 percent interest.....

My Dad taught us kids about silver and gold and just passing it on. Three sisters all had big weddings paid for by Dad with profits from silver over the years.

I don't barter with silver, but I do negotiate the price a bit. I plan to barter with toilet paper and bourbon.image
