To me it is a collection. To my accountant it is an accumulation. To my mother-in-law, it is a hoard!

An accumulation is a collection without defined standards and focus. A hoarder is an accumulator that needs therapy.

Some of mine are a collection and the remainder more like an accumulation since to be a hoard it would have some sort of organization by date, mintmark, type etc. Generally hoards are the result of some sort of obsessive/compulsive behavior. I'd consider the Binion situation a hoard and an accumulation. In those days some might well have been whored too!

The definition will vary according to perspective.... to an individual, it is usually a collection, to the non-collector it frequently appears to be an accumulation. The 'hoard' definition is usually applied when the accumulated collection is discovered (often post-humously) and reported. Cheers, RickO
