(eBay, first wave closing soon): certified MS 1901 Victorian coins, some gold, NGC Romans added 3/3

This is the core of my daughter Victoria's collection, which I'd been working on since she was born in 2001. She has decided she's not terribly interested in collecting, though she appreciates what I've done. So I'll probably roll one or two of these pieces (like the British shilling and/or halfcrown, maybe) into my personal collection, and sell the rest. I'll put the money into savings bonds for her, so they'll probably mature around the time she'll need college textbooks or a wedding dress or something like that. That was always sort of the original intention of the collection, anyway.

Update: I'm going to list these on eBay soon, all at 99c starts, no reserve, free worldwide shipping.

Initially I was going to listen to offers, but soon realized I had no idea what I was doing. Better to just go the true auction route.

Stand by, and I'll link up the auctions as soon as they're listed.

I've had some offers, but have realized... 1) I don't have any up-to-date ideas on how to price this stuff, 2) In most cases, I've forgotten what I paid for it originally, and 3) the fairest option (for myself and everyone else) would probably be the eBay "true auction" route (99c starts, no reserve, free shipping, and let the chips fall where they may).

Sorry if that's kind of wishy-washy.

So stand by, and I'll get this stuff up on eBay soon.

Thanks for taking the time to list all that detailed catalog info… and coin photos… and slab photos! Very helpful, indeed.

The coins are yours until they are sold. No apologies. We are all grown adults capable of bidding on eBay. I hope it works out in Victoria's favor! Here's to high bidding wars! imageimage

<< <i>Thanks for taking the time to list all that detailed catalog info… and coin photos… and slab photos! Very helpful, indeed. >>

Thanks for takin' the time to look. That's one advantage to selling collections that I've painstakingly kept up with over the years- when it comes time to sell, I've got all that there to copy and paste.

With Victoria's permission, I get to "play with" her money for a little while. I'm seriously thinking of taking the proceeds from these and putting them into a single "trophy" coin- something which would normally be beyond my means. I'd probably go with something from Victoria again, of course, though not necessarily 1901. Dunno if I'd be able to get a Gothic crown, but I once had a lovely 1893 PR63 CAM half sovereign. A piece of proof Vickie gold would sure be nice. I have recently lusted over a DCAM proof Jubilee Head sovereign, but I think that's going to be beyond reach even with the proceeds from all this stuff. (In fact, I'm sure it will be.)

Anybody have any suggestions on a single Victoria "trophy" coin in the $2K-ish range? Or what should be done in general? I was gonna put her money into savings bonds, but since I've got permission to play with it, play with it I shall... numismatically. Savings bonds, while perhaps less volatile, would be so... boring.

Ah, this post makes me sad, considering I remember some of the first threads from you working on her collection. image

Yeah it made me sad, too. But I think he's doing the right thing if she's no longer interested. Continuing to buy/collect for someone who doesn't want them isn't healthy.

Bonds are boring, and I don't think they're doing so well anyway.

Have you tried asking the PM forum? Buying a nice stack of silver, or a gold piece, may yield the best returns in the shortest amount of time.

Sorry to see the Victoria collection being sold, but I understand the reason.

FYI the 1901 1/2d was originally in an ACG MS63RD holder. I tried to cross it to PCGS at any grade, it didn't cross. I broke the coin out of the ACG hold holder, sold the coin to Rob, resubmitted it to PCGS for him, it came back MS64RD.

Don, as I recall, you didn't sell us that halfpenny, you gave it to us. I only repaid you for the grading.

You and Dimitri were definitely the "godfathers" of this collection.

Here is what I am thinking of doing, if I don't find a suitable Victorian "trophy" coin. I will probably buy one of the proof 2008 First Spouse 1/2 oz. gold pieces. It will fill in for my "eclectic" box of 20, which is light on Liteside and modern stuff. Specifically I would go for the Louisa Adams First Spouse coin, since Victoria and I are descendants of the two Adams presidents (and Louisa Adams, wife of the sixth president, is not only better looking than Abigail Adams, but her coin had a much lower mintage, too.) So it would be a modern Liteside widget, but a piece of proof gold.

Maybe. Maybe I'll do something else.

    << <i>Awesome offerings. I really like that Ceylon! >>

Thanks. And I like your avatar. For some reason (restrikes or not), I've always liked the Austrian Franz Josephs. I had a proof restrike "1915" 4-ducat once, and it would knock your eyes out. Really not much more than a bullion coin, when you get down to it, but boy, it sure was pretty. I remember when you could get the 1-ducat pieces for like 49 bucks. Alas, those days are gone.

    Just added the sixpence.

    And the Maundy set.

Still wavering on whether or not to list the florin. Maybe I will, and maybe I'll keep it.

I'm definitely keeping the ex-Terner half-sovereign (but that was already decided, so I didn't even post that one above).

Update: I decided to go ahead and list the florin, too. *sigh*

I understand about the offspring not being interested...and it was a fun pursuit. My oldest could care less, my youngest at least still has a bit of interest in 'his' coins.

I'm always full of advice for saving money for kiddos--if you want any suggestions send me a pm image.

    Thanks, Bob.

And everyone else who bid. There were one or two losers in the Victorian stuff, but overall the results were good, and there were one or two winners, too. In the balance, I was satisfied.

Just found two more 1901 Victorian pieces I'd forgotten I had: a nice looking 1901-C India 1/4 anna in NGC MS64 RB and a 1901 Straits Settlements 5c in PCGS AU53. I will post them when I can get pictures.

Now the holey gold is the front wave, and I just added another piece of that tonight. Then there are the ancients. I might add another piece or two of those when I get a chance.
