What the heck happened on my sub

Has anyone ever received grades like these: All of these packs were bought through the group rips over the past year and a half, except for the 82 Topps with Ripken. I will obviously be giving PSA a call Monday morning.

I'm also confused as to why some of the N9's say no charge while other don't.

Looking for any comments or feedback. thank, Tom

Doesn't the guy from BBCE grade packs for PSA?
  • lightningboylightningboy Posts: 1,483 ✭✭✭
He just authenticates them, I believe. then they are sent back to PSA for a grade. If i am incorrect, I hope somebody clears that process up for me.

Steve establishes authenticity but does not assign the numerical grade.

And yeah, that sub is wacko!

The ones with no charge are typically for packs they don't have the right-sized holders for. That is bizarre! The N4 is for a questionable pack--I have no idea why you'd get all those N9s unless maybe seals were popped on back of packs??

Are they not grading wax packs?? All your wax packs are not graded...I am wondering if your sub is just incomplete??

I didn't realize that until you mentioned it that only the cellos were graded. If seals were popped on the back, as someone mentioned, wouldn't they get some sort of questionable authenticity?

I also thought that maybe they weren't quite finished and it was a computer glitch to release the sub grades. At least that is what I am hoping.

I've got to think that the sub is not complete--maybe they separate the cello grading from the wax grading. If seals were popped, you would NOT see "no grade-no charge". And there's no way all those seals would be popped anyway. So that leaves two possibilities--either the grading is not yet done for the wax packs or PSA has decided to no longer grade wax packs.

I can't imagine them no longer grading wax packs, plus the first 2 packs graded ? authenticity are wax packs. It really has to be unfinished sub. Those packs were in beautiful easy PSA 8+ condition.

I am also almost certain that the sub is just not finished. That is the only explanation that makes sense.

  • grote15grote15 Posts: 29,711 ✭✭✭✭✭
Tom, was your CC charged? PSA will charge to card now right before shipping. If the sub is only partially graded, the charge should not appear on the card yet, or even better, the charge would include all the packs, instead of just those graded or listed as quest auth.

Spoke with PSA at 8 AM today and was told that packs could not be graded because of loose gum and/or broken pieces. However, did not get a definitive answer as to why some lines say N9 "no grade, no charge" and others N9's do not mention "no charge". I will receive a call back later today from someone in operations.

Tom, do you remember the gum being loose and/or broken? I usually choose only wax packs where the gum is not moving easily and definitely in one piece. I'm sure you picked out packs that looked especially nice so I'm hoping nothing happened to them while in transit. Did you take pictures of them before you shipped them? I usually do this in case the packs come back in a condition they didn't leave in. Plus, it reminds me what I sent in. image

I hope everything works itself out.

There is clearly a flaw in sending packs around the country to be authenticated.

I didnt realize they will not grade packs with broken gum. Man, thats crazy. Many of these packs are 20+
years old, broken gum is gonna happen, right?

Sorry about the grades, or lack of them manimage

Those were my thoughts exactly. Unfortunately, I did not take pictures beforehand, but I cherry picked the best of my packs, especially on '81 football, where I own about 40 packs and the 78/79 basketball.

I live in Fresno, CA about 4 hours from Newport Beach. I'm guessing the trip to Illinois and back was more the issue in their condition.

I'm gonna be real interested in hearing their response.

Is PSA now saying they will not grade any wax packs in which the gum is not fused to the top card?? I know they have had their share of issues with wrapper tears, but this information needs to be made public so that people don't send packs in for no reason. Most of the better, higher grade packs have loose gum. And why should broken gum even be an issue??

Yes, grote15, that is pretty much what was suggested over the phone to me.

    +1

Ive got 8-10 packs I want to sub, but may not now. Although most of them have good gum now, who knows what
a trip or 2 around the U.S. in the mail might do to it. Really does bum me out if this is truly the caseimage

Well, I just called and was told point blank they will NOT grade a pack in which gum is either loose or broken.

I guess I'm getting back 24 of my 38 packs in my last sub ungraded. Very disappointing.

Wow I just had 18 packs logged first week February. Wish I had known
  • lightningboylightningboy Posts: 1,483 ✭✭✭
Yes, what grote15 had suggested is the case going forward. 24 of my 31 beautiful 70's/80's packs are coming back ungraded. I explained to the gentleman in customer service that there is a greater likelihood that the gum has been loosened/cracked going to and from BBCE, than from my original shipment to PSA. He said they are exhausting efforts to figure out a solution to their pack grading problem..

As was asked in another thread, i would think this will certainly curtail the amount of high grades to packs going forward. As was noted, the packs that have been stored the best and in the nicest condition will be the ones likely to be hampered by this policy change.
