sample slab collectors - help identifying these 2 NGC slabs please?
does anyone know if these are listed anywhere in the "slab book" or any other list of sample types online?
thanks in advance for the help!
picked these 2 up, on ebay:
1st one:
have never seen a 1958-D dime sample. also never seen a dime sample with the serial number 199998
(i do have a liberty nickel sample and a kennedy sample with this serial number, but not a dime)

2nd:
first time seeing "1964 NGC 50C" on the first line on the label.

thanks for looking!

<< <i>Sampleslabs.com is a good resource for some of the earlier (pre-2011) slabs. >>
these 2 are not listed there
The 64 Kennedy would fit into the type 8 range and again the half is not listed.
Conder101 would have them listed by label and holder type. List them ATS so he can see them and comment. Be sure to post a picture of both sides for him.
Both are very nice finds, thats what I look for. (Unlisted types)
Also check on the NGC Generations thread.

I actually think the dime should list as 6.9 . It fits perfectly between 6.8 and 7, IMO.
I know some of the samples Cameron listed in his website weren't discovered until like 2004 so these possibly surfaced after his passing, and didn't make it to his list.
The NGC slab generations thread conder posted is great, but I don't think he listed any sample slabs there, just the regular production slabs.
Anyway, I have 3 other samples that are also not listed anywhere. Instead of getting closer to completing my set, i keep finding new types a d my aet gets bigger and bigger. I'm now 70% complete for type 1 through 15.
Btw, the kennedy half was only $27, free shipping! On ebay
I don't have many NCG samples, I have been working on PCGS Samples and type 1-10 or so and I do still need a couple of them but over all I have 82 samples.
Been working on a date set by PCGS numbers in rattlers and mostly 60-64 and some dates are just tough to find plus there is no documentation to say that there were even released.
Coin number 5120 is most common and then to find the correct coin number with the date is hard for the set.

<< <i>You need to also show the back of the slabs for proper identification. >>
I could (when I get them in hand), but why?
There's no need for a reverse pic to identify a SAMPLE slab. I'm guessing that's why sampleslabs.com posted obverse pics only.
There are no 2 sample slabs (NGC) I know of, that have identical obverse/label and just a different hologram on the back..
<< <i>Yonico, Glad you have a nice set of samples going there.

Awesome!
I couldn't do that with NGC; for only type 1 to 15, there are almost 70 slabs, and that's just 1-per-type. If I collected all different dates for each type, I would go crazy
And like you said, I'm not even sure what or how many dates they used for each type..
I just collect 1 of each slab type (different slab/label combinations). I have 45 or 47 different ones (besides duplicates) so far and I'm not even 3/4 of the way done.
Thanks for the info!

If yes then it is a 13.

<< <i>Does yours have the large hologram on the reverse?
If yes then it is a 13.

NGC 13 label reads "1964 50c", mine has "1964 NGC 50c"
It is definitely not 13.
Also, even identical slabs with a different serial number were listed as a different type, only for their different serial. So I don't think this one will qualify as 13 anyways.
Thank you though!
You are correct it is not a 13.
I have a few more that are in my SDB at the bank. I will go and see them on Weds.
I'll let you know if I can help then.

Larry,
Thank you very much!
The help is greatly appreciated!
I have a 64 Half in a green label that is a NGC 1.5 with the same serial number but the last # is 007
Larry
<< <i>Has the label on your 58-D faded?

Hey Larry,
Not 100% sure on the label's color, it's on the way from eBay atm.
But still, do you not think a different denomination coin should have its own type number?
I do have a NGC 1.5 half dollar, as well as a liberty nickel, all 3 share the same serial number, like you said.
Check out My sample slabs here
Thanks again!
The number 199998-007 would be the 7th coin in the lot.
All coins in the lot would be 199998- followed by oo1, 002, 003 and so on.
Larry
<< <i>It is my understanding that the numbers were submitter numbers and the last 3 digits were the number of coins sent in.

Larry >>
Correct.
The serial number part BEFORE the hyphen is the submission number, yes. But here there was no real submission number, since NGC slabbed those dimes themselves and gave the slabs away at shows to promote their new product.
The problem with the sample slabs was, NGC use the same serial number for multiple batches of samples. So you have a 199998-007 on your half dollar, and I have a 199998-007 with a V nickel, and then someone else has 199998-007 with a 64' dime. You know what I mean?
I'm selling some duplicate samples on eBay right now, and 2 of the coins I'm selling are one 1922 $1 and one 1923 $1, and both of them have the same identical serial and slab number, 199999-020. I also have 2 other coins on my set that have the exact same serial number 191578-010.
That's why it's confusing.
I just checked.............488 samples in my collection maybe 10 dupes.

Wait WHAT? You mean only 10 of the 500 samples you have are dupes?
Like you have close to 500 different ones? How.. What.. Wow!!
I didn't even know that many different types existed!
P.S I knew I saw that username somewhere before! lol we always bid on the same items on eBay!
I hope you get my peace dollar pair
one of my fav dupes
Herb
more like 950 unique different sample slabs!!!
But that is for all TPG companies that existed.

It will be impossible!!!
Similar to every olympic contender falling on their rear on the slopes but still can earn the gold!!!

What a great set of NGC samples you have there, And a nice write up on them, with the slide show so you can see what they all look like.
Will be watching for when you get the missing one photographed.
I only have a couple and I will see which they are compared to yours.
I have a my list of them ATS at a small location,
If you or anyone has a chance drop by and check out the list of PCGS Samples I have.
There are no pictures but they are all referance to samples slabs web site.
My list is at the end of the first page. I am only working on types 1 thru 10, but have a few later ones.

WOW! I mean I know, but even 500 out of 950 is pretty amazing! That's really nice!
<< <i>The race for the best and most complete sample slab set is harder than finding the finest coin set in the world!!!

Absolutely! This is one set you sometimes have to be LUCKY to add coins to, and it's not a set where someone with endless money can easily beat you on.
It's hard, it's challenging, and it's lots of fun!!

Thanks for the nice comments. i'm working on imaging the rest of them and will upload the pics soon..
i'm wondering how many collectors actually collect those sample slabs like us, by type, as a set?
btw, Just saw your list of samples.. now that is IMPRESSIVE!
I feel like i've seen this list before.. did we have a chat about sample slabs once ATS? do you have a PCGS rattler with a proof eagle as your avatar there (CS)?
That my avatar. Proof silver eagle that was lost in the mail somewhere in Portland, OR. Thats the last update for the mail.
Your question of how many collect samples like us,
I would guess that there is a large handful of us. At least on ebay there seems to be no lack of bidders for the rare samples. But the over priced common stuff stays there for quite a while.
