Since Tim (Grote) is hellbent on ripping defenseless packs, I thought it would be nice to share my lastest pickup just will be saved from such a fate. Really excited to add it to the collection.

And here's the pack that Mike was kind enough to hook me up with as part of the same deal! Can you imagine his will power in allowing a two-Met rack to get away?

That is an awesome rack too especially with the two Mets showing including Mr. Jones. I really like how nicely centered the cards on top are too.

What I really like is those nice double seams which Topps discontinued after 1973 due to the decrease in card count in racks from 54 to 42.

Nice job Mike. That is an awesome 71 rack. Lord knows they are hard to come by.

He wasn't depicted as a Met on this card, but became one midway through the 1972 season...

It's a common misconception that all GAI packs are suspect, but that is not the case. That 71 rack is definitely authentic.

Definitely true. If you look, you can see the double seams on the 1971 rack along with the correct header card with the circle punch and blank back which were used in 1971.

You guys crack me up. Nice pick-up! Really doesn't get better than the 1971s, does it? I looked at a few racks, but none had the nice header card like that.
Always buying 1971 OPC Baseball packs.
  • Hey Mike,

Congrats on an amazing pick up. I am not a huge fan of sealed items but that is one that cannot be ignored. Considering that they dont pop around too often. I would love to own one in my collection some day.

Awesome 71 rack, Mike! You just don't see too many of those around anymore. My dad has probably told me 100 times that he remembers opening approximately 20 boxes of 71 Topps when they came out as it was the first year that he really got into cards (he was 17 at the time). I remember being 7 or 8 (around 1985) and he had about 4 or 5 sets of them and he would tell me about all the players, etc. So the set has a special place for me, as well. Of course, the sets were eventually sold off. I think you showed me a 71 cello pack at the national that you picked up. That was also an unbelievable piece!

    Thanks guys!!!

I remember meeting your dad at the National Jeremy. Great story. Yeah, I'm still pretty happy about that 1971 cello pack. They are even harder to find than the racks. Hopefully, I'll see you in Cleveland this year.
