I agree with the prevailing sentiment that the early half of the 20th century produced some VERY beautiful coin designs, it was an era of beautiful arts and crafts in many areas... but in hand the countrys early coins are the most beautiful to me....the beauty is in the rawness and flaws and hand made quality that defined those early days.

1)$20 St.Gaudens, 2)Merc.Dime, 3)Walking half, 4)Standing Lib qtr, 5) Bar Coppers( although simplistic in their design compared to my top 4 selections and their intricate detail, I like their simplicity and representation of the 13 orig. colonies )

To be sure, there have been some beautiful U. S. coin designs nominated here for the "Most Beautiful", and I can understand their popularity with collectors. But I am absolutely stunned that there has been virtually no mention of the beautiful Draped Bust and Flowing Hair designs that graced our early Federal coinage. Only jayPem and perhaps just one other even mentioned these beautiful designs. Are modern collectors simply unfamiliar with these designs, or have they really fallen out of favor with today's collectors?
Of course, I think the 1792 half disme is beautiful, so perhaps it's just me.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
