A new Civil War token variety?

How often is a previously unknown Civil War token variety discovered? It seems with the plethora of low population varieties, a new one would be reported from time to time.

I don't think it's very often nowadays, but worthy of a bump.

That why virtually every CWT collector specializes in one or a limited number of areas. There have been some who tried to collect as many of the 10 to 11 thousand varieties that exist. The highest even the most dedicated collectors get is somewhere around 5,500.

There are many groups of tokens that a collector can select. One to collect by a given occupation, like druggists, token makers, millers, dry goods stores, and railroads and streetcar operators. Another way to collect is to get one from every state, which not as easy as it sounds, and going beyond that one from every town where a merchant issued a CWT. You are only limited by your imagination.

For my part I have collected varieties that had political slogans on them, both pro and anti Union. I also collected the New England CWTs, which is a short, but difficult set with lots rarities. I also have a collection of the beautifully illustrated tokens that Milwaukee, Wisconsin die sinker, John Marr, designed.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
  • They come up fairly often though most are minor reverse die difference (a new very similar Indian Head Reverse) or previously undiscovered obverse minor die differences (wording on the merchant side is lined up differently). Still significant discovers await. These pictures are of a previously unknown muling of two obverse dies. imageimage
