I find it interesting how difficult it is to say with certainty that this is a Proof coin based solely upon the photos. The fields certainly lose their reflectivity under the turmoil of the waffling.

I don't know about what error if any was on this sac.
I have seen a fair number of waffle coins and have never been able to make out any error except a sintered planchet waffle here and there which is not the case with this coin.

That's right. I was thinking of the more recent pieces.

I've never seen an actual error coin that has been waffled, but tons of coins and planchets that look perfectly normal out in the market that have been waffled. WHY? I've been asking this ever since the waffle coins first started to show up. I find this to be very strange, suspicious even.
Actually, there are Waffled coins with major errors that have surfaced along with the huge quantities of Waffles that do not appear to have any error on them.
About two years ago, I bought a group of Waffled Presidential Dollars - three of them were Indented strikes, easily seen thru the ridges.
The group also had Waffled Clad Quarters and Halves struck with the Martha Washington Dies !
By the way, the huge Waffling Machine is incredibly loud!

I suppose that works if you're into taking the easy way out of questions like this.
If you had that coin in-hand, I'm sure you could see the Proof surfaces.
The Proof surface on Proof Waffled coins are easy to see, even if you can't see the Mintmark.

Fred, thank you for the information about the waffled errors and the machine. I would love to go on a private mint tour someday to see all the inner workings.
And as Fred said about the proof waffled coins with no mintmark, You can clearly see the difference and know that you do indeed have a waffled proof coin in hand.

I guess I've always wondered how it was possible to tell that these didn't just result from overlapping another coin while being inside the cancellation machine.
I thought the mint originally used a outside vendor to waffle and destroy the coins and then they or some employees decided to sell them. I thought that was discussed here a few years back.
Then again I may have just dreamed this as I was in a holiday recently.

You sure about that??
But really, it doesn't matter since these coins are all over the place as an active market has been created.
What would be cool would by to find a well know variety that's been "waffled".
I expect that this proof coin didn't belly up to the quality bar as the motto looks really weak for an S Mint coin.

JMHO,I dont consider a waffled coin an error.Mostly done by the mint on purpose.Interesting pieces? yes but not an error.
<< <i>That's a really neat piece. >>
I agree. Especially the reverse.
