A look back at some 1999-2000 prices...

I've posted an old buy ad we had previously, but today as I was looking for something in my office and came across a stack of checks from 1999-2000. I've posted a photo of some noteworthy ones below. Pretty crazy to think what things used to sell for. Some of these items have lost literally 99% of their value. Most 90% or more.

For those who don't want to deal with reading the checks, the info is after the photo.

[Thankfully we sold all of these cards/cases back in the day.]

I have sold 2 of the Bonds update PSA 10's in the past year for around 50 bucks each.

    Appreciate today-

I get weird looks from people now when I say this I but paid off my Mom's hospital bill and a couple other bills for her in late 2000 selling Bonds/Maddux/Piazza/Juan Gonzalez PSA cards among some other players. And not heavy quantity either. Stuff you can buy now for as the one poster above me commented, $50 for a Bonds 86 Fleer Update, peanuts compared to 1998-00. Not sure what it was like after Oct 2000 because I was gone from the hobby for about a decade.

Things have not changed - 99 Percent of the cards issued this year will be totally worthless in a very short period of time.

At the time, there were only 5 PSA 10s, versus almost 1,400 today. There wasn't a book value for this card back then. We did sell one of the two we had for $5500 on eBay. It even got a small mention in Beckett. The second one was at a show and sold for at least $4500.

Sports card collecting underwent a huge revival in the late 1990s because of the HR chase and explostion. It was looking like Andruw Jones, Juan Gonzalez, Mac, Sosa and others could end up not only breaking Aaron's HR record, but even potentially approach 1,000 HRs. We were almost all naive about PEDs. Aside from the McGwire Andro controversy, you know what ALL the controversy was about - whether the BASEBALLS were juiced! I am not kidding. There were hundreds of articles saying harder baseballs were the reason for the HR jump.

I may be misremembering , but didn't Beckett in the monthly mags used to have a small section, maybe above say the listings for 1986 Fleer Update as an example, for graded card prices, or graded card prices realized? Or was there a section before or after the regular guide area?

They did, and I believe it started right around 1999-2000. For extremely low pop cards like this one at the time, however, I don't believe they listed a price.

  • hahaha people still paying crazy prices like this for modern insert cards that will be worthless in a few years.
I edit almost all my posts because my auto correct is crazy !

Thanks for sharing those. Those were the days when PSA was printing money!

Today's market isn't much different and so too will be its fate.

That's a large part of the reason I don't chase high grade or modern cards priced more on manufacturer rarity and speculation than anything.

With collector grade vintage, supply largely meets demand and the prices are relatively static - 100 more 1955 Topps All American Red Grange PSA 5 cards could pop tomorrow with nominal impact on market price.

Does anyone remember what 2001 Ichiro SPX auto RC's were going for in 2001?
Same goes for Pujols Bowman Chrome auto RC's.

I am trying to remember what they priced at in 2001 then through 2003-2004.
