Did I Do OK On This?

Today at the White Plains show I came across a 1978 complete baseball set for sale for $125. After spending a few minutes looking through it, it was clear that it had been put together from opening packs or vending. While most of the major stars were OC, I estimated at least 20-25% of the commons were really nice.

Also, the one exception to the stars was this:

I was able to get it for $95. I pulled out 11 stars I knew I didn't want, and immediately flipped them at the show for $30. So I'm into it for $65,
and have the Murray and a lot of nice commons to show for it. I've gone through the first series, and I pulled 32 cards that are legitimate 8.5
or 9 candidates. Here's a sampling:

Did I do OK? Also, can someone give me an idea of tough commons to be on the watch for?

I always seem to get something worthwhile at this show!

For $65, I think you did very well, Dave. The Murray if a bit OC, slight chipping on right edge, I'd grade it a 7.5. The Sadek is a tough card in a 10 and that one does look very nice, as do the others.

I think you did well. Those cards look great. I wouldn't submit most commons unless you think they are legitimate 10 contenders. You can pull up the pop report on PSA for free to see which commons are low pop 9s. It will take a 9 for basic cards to hopefully break even, and that is being optimistic. I have been working in my raw set for a while. If you end up deciding to sell the set instead if having it graded, PM me. Thanks

Not bad at all for $95.

Thats a great buy. One of the most enjoyable things I am doing is picking up raw sets from card dealers that either don't do grading or care much about it. I have found some real gems. A 1971 Baseball, a 1971 Football and a 1973 Football that is immaculate. I am having a lot of cards graded. The 71 Football in particular has a bunch of 9's

PaulMaul be sure to check the pop report and see if you have any hard to find commons that might grade high! Good luck and Congrats

Nice pickup. I would have thought $125 was a good price too for those pack fresh 78's.
