Pic isn't very good, but the lettering looks inconsistent. Lack of detail in the leaf, possibly from being worn down, but probably because the detail wasn't there in the first place.

I don't remember exactly when, but I don't think that Canada went to .9999 until something like 2006 or so. And then they went to .99999 recently.

Maple leafs coins minted between 1979 and 1982 have a gold content of .999. In 1983 they became four nines. Since 2007 (except for 2010) a five nine special issue has been sold in addition to the standard four niner.
The coin in the OP is worn, possibly cleaned (crud on the left hand 9999 makes it look strange). After comparing the OP coin with this one, I'm not convinced the OP's coin is counterfeit.
