Become a PNG Dealer

JulianJulian Posts: 3,370 ✭✭✭
For you coin dealers out there that are not members of the Professional Numismatists Guild, there is a new program to attract qualified dealers to our membership. It is loaded with bonuses and even a discount on dues. If you know a PNG member, please ask for details. If not, you are welcome to contact me or the PNG directly thru the website, www.pngdealers.org.

PNG member, numismatic dealer since 1965. Operates a retail store, also has exhibited at over 1000 shows.
I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

Read Laura's post and then get back to me.
  • Is there a list available of all the PNG dealers anywhere?

    Regards, Larry

Actually, there's nothing elitist about the PNG, unless you consider that all PNG dealers are bound to abide by a "Code of Ethics" (link) and voted in by other members (about 300 I think). The primary reasons people are refused are because of past or current legal problems -- it is not a popularity contest.

There are a series of qualifications to being a member, including a minimum amount of inventory but associate members can join with as little as $25,000 in inventory, or if employed by a PNG dealer. (membership requirements)

I have been a PNG member for around 14 years and was previously a board member for around 6 years. My personal opinion is that the PNG is the best dealer organization our industry has to offer. As a collector, we feel that you can feel most comfortable doing business with PNG dealers.

Does this mean that every PNG member is golden, or above reproach? Unfortunately not. The PNG cannot control everything about its members. However, if you (anyone!) have a numismatic-related issue with ANY PNG dealer, you can resolve that issue directly and quickly with the Exec Director of PNG, Bob Brueggeman. In most cases, Bob will take care of the issue by personally arbitrating it for both parties, to everyone's satisfaction. If that cannot be done, you can request a formal arbitration at a very low cost. If you do business with a non-PNG dealer, you have no recourse except the court/legal system, which can take years.

I will add that the PNG is NOT perfect as an organization. All organizations like this can be better, and the current board is a great group with great intentions. I think the public perception is that the PNG is a police-force for the hobby. It is not. The PNG is a member-based organization that does everything possible to foster positive aspects of the hobby, and to react to specific complaints against its member dealers.

Last year, the PNG did formally adopt a coin doctoring definition which is part of the Code of Ethics. To my knowledge there has never been a formal complaint made to the PNG regarding this particular issue. I do feel confident that, if one were presented, Mr Brueggeman would handle it expediently and professionally. And that's one very good reason why I think the PNG is worth joining...

There are actually many more reasons, but I don't want to ramble. If you are considering joining, feel free to send me or any other member an email. Or give me a call. I would be happy to discuss it with you.

You can only act on a filed complaint and one that is arbitrable?

The png governance can't initiate action?

I've always wondered what the correlation was between the value of your inventory and the other requirements.

    Cheers,

    Bob
