Long shot ISO decrepit fugio cent

Hi there!

My little boy has requested a Fugio cent for Christmas. When he talks about it, his face lights up. His favorite character from history is Ben Franklin (he did his 3rd grade report on him). He loves antiques, bottle collecting and metal detecting. Not exactly your average video game kind of kid. Anyhow, I looked on ebay for this Fugio cent and WHOA... Never expected to see these prices. I did find one or two that were affordable, but was quickly outbid. So I am in search of a very worn out, poor quality colonial coin at an affordable (very affordable)
price. As long as he can tell that it is a Fugio cent, he will be thrilled to be in possession of a coin that Ben Franklin designed. I know it's a super long shot, but I can only pay $20-$25. I'm really not expecting to find what I'm looking for, but it can't hurt to put it out there... Right?

Thank you for looking.

For $20, you're going to have to look for a replica. Here's one on Amazon

I doubt there have been any that cheap since the 70s . For my 10th birthday I asked for a 1909-S VDB. Instead I got a 1909-VDB. image

That Amazon replica should hold him over, until he can afford a real one (and the price is right!). Glad to see young folks interested in coins/history! image

The crummiest identifiable Fugio I've ever seen was one I sold here in 2011. It was snapped up very quickly at $80.

I bought a 1723 Wood's Hibernia half penny at our small show on Sunday for $20.....but the cheapest Fugio I ever held in
my hands was $175, and I shoulda jumped all over it.

  • So... what coin would you recommend I get him instead from the colonial period?
It doesn't have to be in great condition, it needs to be affordable.
He really is not interested in a replica. He'd rather have something different.

Worn Connecticut coppers sometimes turn up in the $20-30 range. Or, Spanish silver was pretty much the de facto coin of the realm back then, and you can find some nice pistareens (2 real pieces, basically the predecessor of the silver quarter) from the 1780's or 1790's for reasonable prices. Those are cool coins -- they're big, they're wicked historic, they're precious metal, they can be pretty good looking, etc.

  • Hi, If you will activate your Private Message function and send me your name and mailing address, I will send you a 1786 colonial coin from New Jersey (Maris 14-J) at no cost. Not the prettiest, but still a nice example of the variety with some nice detail left on the coin -- head of a horse, plow, and date on the obverse; and a shield on the reverse. It is the first US coin to carry the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" on it.

    That's great.

Frankly, you are more likely to have a fugio donated out of Christmas spirit than find one for sale for $25.

I think Ankurs offer for the $100 holed one is pretty darn nice. I would jump on that if I were you.
  • Hi, I don't know how to contact you to send you the New Jersey ( I also rounded up a 1787 Machin's Mills piece for your son. Thomas Machin was wounded at the Battle of Bunker Hill, and was a major participant in the Revolutionary War -- first on the British side, then on the American side). If you can't activate the Private Message function here, can you please give me a call at work (419) 248-8588 and leave me your name and mailing address.
    Thanks,

That sounds great except I really have spent our limit for this year.. I bought him a metal detector and a guitar already. Big spending is DONE. I'm sure I'll kick myself later for passing though.

Thank you so much! I'm not sure how to send a pm on here yet. Please send me one. It might be easier to respond. I think this forum doesn't like google chrome.
