What's the worst downgrade you've ever heard of?

I think my worst downgrade really was not that bad. It was an 1884cc in ANACS MS64 that went to PCGS MS63+.

Perhaps it is my only downgrade. I feel pretty fortunate that all my others have stayed the same or risen.

About 15 years ago I sent in a NGC67 1944S dollar sign crack to Anacs to get the full steps Dollar Crack variety put on slab.
Came back Anacs66 full steps without mention of the perfectly centered crack.
I thought they had lost their minds with the downgrade. lol
Broke it out last month to send back to NGC.
Maybe see if they 67 it again and then maybe on to PCGS.
    Monster clean full steps coin.
    Ouch.

<< <i>I'm sure it's nowhere near the worst but I sent PCGS a 66RD Lincoln I felt was overgraded. It came back 64RD, turning a $325 coin into a $4 one.

Yes, of course. I actually made money because I was paid more than I spent. Funny thing is, PCGS said I could buy it back for $2, in its new holder. "Sure, why not?" Now I don't know what to do with it.

    I'll give you $3 for it!!image >>

Sorry. I gave it to a newbie.

I had acquired a pop 1 MS66 seated half (finest by 2 points at either service) and the coin was simply not a gem. The coin was sent back for review and was downgraded to MS65 where it's value plummeted by 66%. Even though it was in a MS65 holder it traded hands for MS64 money....the same grade/price it fetched years earlier as a raw coin. I graded the coin a technical 63+. Had the coin been cracked out and resubmitted it would have come back 2 points lower.

All I've got is my avatar - cracked it out of an old, small ANA slab graded MS62.
I think it's undergraded, but twice now PCGS has sent it back with questionbable toning.

Most likely because the field color is on the center devices and is blue (blue = evil AT QT)!

<< <i>A dealer who was looking for an upgrade on a Proof Morgan dollar cracked it out an sent it in for a re-grade. It came back marked P-L. After another crack-out it got back into a Proof holder, but he still lost several hundred dollars. >>

I am consoled but a little by knowing it happens to others. Sounds like 42 of my last 127 coins graded.

this coin went from NGC 65 to PCGS 64 on crossover. It's still the same coin and I think I could get the 65 price that I paid if I sought to sell the coin. Smoetimes, the grade on the label doesn't matter (like with Meltdown's dime)

I had a bust quarter in 62 ngc...thought easy 63......cracked it, sent it in, it came back AT bodybag. This was back in the day ,so I took it to JA and he corrected them.

Recently I had a nice 1920D SLQ in small anacs EF 45, that I bought 10 years ago, I cracked it out. I sent it to PCGS and it came back VF 35. This was a Unique Coin as it was the only one I had.

Could I get a clarification on how JA 'corrected' your bust quarter that got AT bodybag??? Are you saying it was just changed arbitrarily?? Something doesn't sound right, almost as if it got changed because it simply got bagged, when you thought it should have gotten a 63??

I had an ugly ANACS AU 50 1916 SLQ that I broke out and sent to PCGS - it came back XF40.

JA put it back in the 62 holder...........what ?????????? The truth doesn't sound right? Perhaps my sentence stucture was confusing. "I/He corrected them" was a joke from the movie The Shining. Seriously??? The story is true. I screwed up cracking it out and he reviewed it/had it reviewed and I got it back into the 62 holder. Warm Regards, Mike.
I personally handed him the original insert and white fatty holder. OK?

I once had an AU50 gold coin in an NGC holder. I felt it was overgraded so sent it back to NGC for a grade review. They confirmed it was an AU50. So I was a little dumb and sent it to PCGS for a crossover. Came back as an XF40. Knowing that NGC would once again grade it as an AU50, because they graded it twice as such, I sent it back (in the PCGS holder, another dumb idea), and somehow the coin was then an XF45. Funny how they gave it a different grade when they weren't on the hook for money.

That was the start of me getting a little sour with coin collecting.

1839 Petite Head (of '40).... graded MS61 at NGC....came back AU53 from PCGS. With faint rub and a trace of original
red, I felt and still feel it should be AU58.

Sounds a little like a Stewart Blay IHC story from a few years ago.

I don't know Stewart Blay. I only know what I did and what I think about the subjective nature of coin grading. Regards, Mike

A flying eagle cent (not an 1856) went from NGC AU58 to PCGS XF45. I felt it was an AU53, not an XF though.
