I am going to go out on a limb and say struck through dried glue?

I was also thinking of struck through a mass of string?

It is very cool either way! Nice addition. image

    Year? Mint if required? Silver/clad?

    it's a mass and curls.

Does the mint clean with steel wool?
Ribbon curl cut off the edge of a piece of metal?

How in the world does something like this make it past quality control and wind up in a proof set?

I shy away from string only because there is no braiding impression.

You should see what else I have in my proof error collection image

The seller did say it was struck thru string, NGC just says struck thru, and I am open to ideas.

What ever it was, it was spiraled, even the strike through over the nose is laid over it's self creating a loop. Some sort of shaving that curled as it was removed from the host.

At first was thinking a spring that stayed intact on one end in the incuse design of the nose
but was already partially unravelled before the strike. But it meanders off into 3 different directions.
Don't understand how a spring or string could do that.

    Very cool.

I have no problem with struck through partially unraveled string.

    Hmmm.

    What kind of string?

Better yet, what "kind of string" would resist the 120+ Tons of pressure used to mash hardened steel against hardened steel with a copper nickel chunk of alloy between them with out being mush into nothing?

    Just curious?

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

String usually leaves an impression. Proof coins especially, have tiny struck through string or dust in many cases.

I agree that it looks to have been struck through a clump of string. The use of the word cloth is not appropriate for this coin, though.
