If Ben Franklin had his way....

....Our early coinage would have Turkeys on the reverse.

Post a coin with a bird other than an Eagle on it.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Franklin's Letter to His Daughter (excerpt)

"For my own part I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen the Representative of our Country. He is a Bird of bad moral Character. He does not get his Living honestly. You may have seen him perched on some dead Tree near the River, where, too lazy to fish for himself, he watches the Labour of the Fishing Hawk; and when that diligent Bird has at length taken a Fish, and is bearing it to his Nest for the Support of his Mate and young Ones, the Bald Eagle pursues him and takes it from him.

"With all this Injustice, he is never in good Case but like those among Men who live by Sharping & Robbing he is generally poor and often very lousy. Besides he is a rank Coward: The little King Bird not bigger than a Sparrow attacks him boldly and drives him out of the District. He is therefore by no means a proper Emblem for the brave and honest Cincinnati of America who have driven all the King birds from our Country...

"I am on this account not displeased that the Figure is not known as a Bald Eagle, but looks more like a Turkey. For the Truth the Turkey is in Comparison a much more respectable Bird, and withal a true original Native of America... He is besides, though a little vain & silly, a Bird of Courage, and would not hesitate to attack a Grenadier of the British Guards who should presume to invade his Farm Yard with a red Coat on."

Welcome to the forum. Your comments about Franklin and the turkey are most apropos on this Thanksgiving holiday. I must compliment you on your avatar, however. One of the cleverest that I have seen.

He advocated having a turkey on our coinage and in a wry sort of a way he was ahead of his time. Nowadays our coins have all sorts of political turkeys on them, they are Republicans and Democrats - dead all - and they have replaced the ideals of liberty that used to grace our coinage.

A point to ponder: If Franklin had his way, would we now have turkeys on our coins, and be sitting down to a feast of bald eagle on Thanksgiving? As magnificent as the bald eagle is as a symbol of our country, it looks a little too scrawny for a good meal. Take a look at the eagle depicted on the reverse of the 1792 half disme. Would your holiday guests be impressed with that on a platter? I'll take a fat old turkey any day, and pass the cranberry sauce. image

    Thanks ricko,

This is a Mel Wacks counterstamp that was issued on Nov. 25th 1976 with a postal-cancelled envelope (cancelled at Turkey, Texas!)

the info below is courtesy of TAMS:
A full color reproduction of John James Audubon’s engraving (1830) of a wild turkey is featured on the
envelope, along with the following quote: “The turkey is a bird of courage and would not hesitate to attack
a grenadier of the British guards who would presume to invade his farmland with a red coat on,” with the
facsimile signature Benj. Franklin. The postage used was the 3¢ Wild Turkey Wildlife Conservation stamp
and the 13¢ Bicentennial 1776-1976 stamp featuring a bust of Franklin. And, appropriately, the
cancellation reads “TURKEY, TX 79261 NOV 25 PM 1976.” The back of each envelope was printed with
a serial number, and “LIMITED EDITION of 500.” My records indicate a mintage of 200.

Thank you for the welcome Ldhair and MrHalfDime.

Perhaps Mr. Franklin would have become president if his penchant for Ortolan and good red wine had not drawn him to France. image

It is the second of Mel Wacks creations where a commemoration of the Viking I Mars lander was the first.
