On this electronically slow day, how about a question?

Which do you prefer or believe to be correct: mintmark or mint mark?

As far as I know it was always 2 words.

Either is acceptable in the coin world it seems but I believe when you look at proper English, it would be two words.

The word(s) has been, is now, and always will be used both ways...and is acceptable either
way, as far as I know. However, it is only correctly written as mint mark, referring to
    a single unit.
It can also be mint mark's for multiple units.
Everything starts and everything stops at precisely the right time for precisely the right reason.

    Presumably without the apostrophe.

Although one could refer to "a mint mark's shape" or something like that.

    All snark aside:

Technically, it appears that "mintmark" isn't considered a word. At least no spell checker I know of will fail to flag it. But then how do compound words form in the first place? People make the same "mistake" over and over again, until it becomes accepted even by the folks who set themselves up as prescribing what is and is not proper English.

I can personally go with either way, but of course if you ask me what the "authorities" on proper English usage say, I will tell you that they don't consider "mintmark" a word.

    I vote "Mint Mark".

  • I generally prefer mint mark, but both are acceptable. I believe I've written it both ways in the past.

I like two words. The New Oxford American Dictionary defines "mintmark" and notes it is also written "mint mark".
