Yes.
George was wheeling 33 pallets of pennies to his cargo van when mint officials stopped him.
He claimed that this 33 pallets of pennies were all pocket change from he and his brother.
When confronted with the die chip evidence, George confessed to his crime. The black market metal cartel would have to get their tons of zinc elsewhere.
"In 1875, Mint officials secretly modified a reverse die by gouging a small dot into the N in ONE. The die was put into production one morning in order to catch an employee of 50 plus years' standing, who was suspected of stealing coins. Late that morning the employee was called aside and asked to empty his pockets, which contained 33 of the marked cents. At first, he insisted his pocket change was from his son, but when confronted with the secretly marked die, he admitted his guilt, and tendered his resignation in disgrace."
No Way Out: Stimulus and Money Printing Are the Only Path Left
I think he was referring to what 33 cents would buy in 1875 as opposed to stealing pennies today for financial gain.
Although, according to the inflation calculator it would be equal to $6.80 today
