Hi guy's, I was discussing with my dealer friend about how cool the gimmick of placing coins (Sacagawea Dollar/Lincoln cent) in cereal boxes for collector's. Not realizing these would turn out to be BIG premiums in the future! This is when my buddy told me that they did the same premise with packs of cigarettes, placing two pennies in the packs. In which, turned out to be the discovery of the 55 double die. WoW! I did not know this. How many of you guy's did? " You learn something new everyday".-joeyimage

Yep! My friend was right. I just googled it and it explains in the "Wikipedia". Very cool!

Yes, the insertion of two cents in the cigarette packs was not actually a gimmick, but a way of returning change. A pack of cigs in a vending machine was 23 cents, and you put in 25 cents.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Yes, it has been discussed here on this forum in the past. It was only on the East coast, Boston area possibly. The two cents were given back as change in cigarette vending machines.

Sorry. Nothing to add. Already been mentioned. Too slow on the keyboard.

Was thinking about this the other day - it would be cool if any of the sealed cigarette packs exist with the doubled die cents still in them. Not likely I know ...

It would be neat to see an original one. That is also an idea for the Chinese counterfeiters to work on.
