A gift from my mom. 1944 U.S./Philippines Twenty Centavos New ref pics added

I got this coin in the mail today from my mom, she told me it came from her father when he was in the war. I of course thought cool!! I never got to meet my grandfather as he died young but I know a lot about him. When I was looking at this coin I noticed that the date looks to be repunched or doubled, any opinions on this would be greatly appreciated. Opinions about the coin are welcome also lol.....

I see what is a cool story! But, not any doubling. Perhaps it's shelf or mechanical doubling.

  • Thanks Bob, I was thinking that also , it was the distortions on the 44 that made me think RPD.

  • My grandfather was in the Navy and I have some of his logs in which he even drew pics of the ship he was on very interesting stuff to read about what they were doing daily. I have a good number of world coins from my grandfather on my Fathers side also that he got during the war, he was one of Merills marauders .

  • Can you show a close up of the mint mark?

    There is a 1944 D/D USA-PHIL 20C ALLEN-12.04b Repunched mm

  • Here is the mint mark and a doubling can be seen. I have also added a new pic of the date showing the doubling that is very noticeable.

  • I can't tell much from that but it looks like it is the same type of mechanical doubling as the date so ...... I guess you are right back where you were.
