Question for the experts on PCGS US coin pricing

Coin FinderCoin Finder Posts: 7,337 ✭✭✭✭✭
What retail market is there for genuine, details PCGS graded coins and what is the going retail price? I/2 of gray sheet?

Assume a common seated liberty quarter needs to be sold with AU details and "cleaned" Not bad but, bad enough not to grade. How would you approach pricing such an item?

Thanks!

I am by no means any expert, but I would venture that it really depends on the eye appeal, and reason for the details grade. I don't usually buy details graded coins, but have ended up with a few from submissions. Of course these were coins that I thought would straight grade so IMO the eye appeal was decent. But instead of cracking them and selling raw, or greatly discounting I put a price that was around 1 grade lower and took offers.
Many collectors still buy coins to put in albums and have no problem buying details coins that look nice with minor flaws for their albums.

Many coins that come back "cleaned" are easily fixed with patience. Crack out, leave in gasket, put on steamy bathroom window sill for 6-12 months while blowing the dust off of it every week or two, flip over for 6-12 months while blowing the dust off of it every week or two, send it back in to PCGS for slabbing. The coin may not be pretty but it will be crusty, should make it into a normal holder and then you can sell it and move on with your life without losing a ton of money.

Also, many buy these coins as 'spot holders' until they can find/afford the coin in the grade they want..... others just really do not care, they just like coins. So, pricing becomes a matter of conjecture - certainly 'list' price is not appropriate.... however, I would say two grades penalty would be suitable. Cheers, RickO
