1864-S Seated Half Dime - guess the grade **Grade posted**

Just received back an Economy Tier package and thought this was one of the more interesting grades of the group.

Take a guess and feel free to explain your reasoning!

Will post the grade later tonight.

Clearly a tough issue to grade - the guesses here spanning 25 points. I cracked this out of an ICG VF25 holder and was only expecting a 20. Taking a closer look though, VF35 is probably closer to the technical grade of the coin, given the blunt obverse strike.

PCGS VF25. Details of 35, original surfaces with a few light scratches.

netted to 25 would be reasonable

VF30 is what comes to mind.

..... but, if you thought it was an interesting grade, it's likely in a much higher or much lower holder.

  • I like it as a VF35

The detail looks 30 but the surfaces appear void of life. It somebody netted it hard it could go all the way down to F15. If somebody was really generous then it could be as high as XF40.

My guess is VF25 on the label.

    Awww

My guess was going to be old cleaning of some sort.

    Yeah!

I get to prove I'm still learning!

The color differences fooled me, then I notice the white balance and exposures are different after the reveal. So the extra Crud is just chance and the additional color differences are photography.

Since I learn from my mistakes, I try to educate myself by making as many mistakes as possible.

A fair grade. Maybe a bit generous but not out of line.

Seems like the highest possible grade achievable since the obverse looks mid-range VF and the reverse is bordering on XF.

I've seen a number of choice to gem uncs of this date over the years and don't recall any being not well struck. I'd have figured VF30 tops on this one.
