1890-CC Morgans MS-64 and MS-65 from Newman Sale

Did anyone look at these coins in person? I was looking through the Morgan results today. Very strong prices overall, some stronger and more insane than others.

But why did a 90-CC in MS-64 sell for 6500 and a 90-CC in MS-65 sell for over 18k???

Neither was CAC'd, but the the only thing I can image is that a sharpshooter felt that these could be dipped and upgraded.

Any thoughts?

those coins sold for that money entirely based on the reason why I cannot afford to bid in these kind of auctions. Irrational Exuberance in my OPINION> and if anyone will wake up with a HangCoinOver that biddler will. Unless of course he's so wealthy it doesn't matter and money is of no object..........yet they still fume if you bump their bentley with a shopping cart just the same.

From the pics, I'd say there was zero chance at an upgrade, dip or no dip.

Eric paid $5 for the MS65image quite a profit. Oy, Should all investments pay so well!

They didn't look to have any upgrade potential from the images I saw either.

But, there certainly were other, cheaper Morgans that traded at closer to normal market levels for someone who just wanted a piece of the Newman action.

Neither one is attractive IMO, not into the brown molted toning. Obviously it's about the provenance.

I agree, no upgrade. The 65 has a wonderful die crack from the nose to the tip of the neck. Poor strike
and a well worn die. Or maybe a great strike from a worn out die.

I actually like the MS-64 graded piece better that the MS-65. I do not think that the MS-65 would cross if someone tried to do it. The cheek is not clean enough.

good question, that's crazy, but it takes at least 2 different bidders for that to happen, so am I missing something? Is there some rare 90cc vam that commands such a premium? To me, looks like the 64 was cleaned/retoned and the 65 is overgraded.
