If you could only pick one of these..

Found a nice display case for my flowing hair Cents.

If you could have any of these for free, which would you pick? I know what I would keep, but I am wondering what others would say.

  • Nice collection.........I would hate to let any of them go...hard to choose.

ETA: I'd keep the Liberty Cap Cent because of rarity.

The liberty cap is very difficult to find even in this condition. There are many more chain and wreath cents around. I have a wreath cent so I don't need that one, but my second choice is the second one from the top because it has the most detail.

I am determined to get one eventually.

I guess the 3rd one as I think it has the best chance to appreciate and it is likely to be the most liquid.

I agree completely and would add that is a cool set & display.
  • I don't know much about copper at all but I would pick the chain cent. You don't have to know much about copper to know that the chain cent is a cool coin.

Interesting that all 4 coins have been picked.

In terms of value, I'd estimate them as follows
    Liberty Cap $5000-$6000
    Vine and Bars Wreath $4000-$5000
    Chain Cent $3500-$4000
    Lettered Edge Wreath $1500-$2000

    Rarity:
    Liberty Cap R-6.1
    Chain Cent R-5.7
    Lettered Edge R-5.5
    Vine and Bars R.4.5

    Eye appeal:
    Vine and Bars
    Chain?
    Lettered Edge
    Liberty Cap.

Personally I would definitely keep the rarest and most valuable. The Liberty Cap. There just arent many of those on the market.

I would hate like hell to sell ANY of these beauties. But if I must choose one it would have to be the chain cent.

I bought several of those display cases but ended up leaving them unused because of concerns that the wood/velvet will cause unwanted toning. Does anyone have familiarity with these displays in particular?

If I were forced to choose one, I'd sell them all and take the proceeds to buy that particular type in a better condition where wear/surface damage would not have such an impact on my appreciation of the design.

    I like this suggestion.
  • Cap
  • The '93 Cap for sure.

Sheldon considered the 1793 Liberty Caps "the aristocrats of the early cents" and I agree. Hard to choose against it in this scenario regardless of grade.

Keeping just the display case was not one of the options.

I'll give my two cents worth as if I were actually a collector with the means to afford them. In this hypothetical world I'd pass on all 4 of them. I know that they are tough but I'd rather wait for one with a better planchet and fewer dings.
