Any nice high end coin shops in New York?

Next week i am going to new york and wondering if there are any must go to coin shops while in the area.

Sadly...no.
Other than Stacks and Heritage galleries, there are very few decent shops from what I have found.

Ah, you gotta look. I know of a stack of Pr Mercs and Pr Indians...stacks of DMPL Morgans...nothing dipped...but ya gotta look. This one is mine. I am...not sure he has heard of numerical grading...

PS - Not high end though. It's a pile of junk. But, in that pile....well, no high end prices.

No, the rents in New York City are basically too high to allow a coin shop to survive, other than Stack's, which is very high end and has been in their building a very long time (for all I know, they own the building).

If you do go to Stack's, though, let us know how your experience was.



edited to add: Check the American Numismatic Society's website - they're definitely worth a visit!

Back in 2002 when I was walking down W 57th on my way to Stacks, I chanced upon just one of those low end bottom feeding coin shops about two doors down. Not sure if it is still there.

Stacks was well worth the visit.

I remember buying brown box IKE's from a coin shop selling from a street kiosk near The Towers when I worked in lower Manhattan back in my college days.
I think they were $8 each. I still have about a dozen of them put away and I think they were all Peg leg varieties.

But good coin shops are tough to find in NY.

Rubenstein Coins is a great little shop on the Island that I believe is still in business. Haven't been there in years though.

Scarsdale Coin is in Westchester County....

If you have access to wheels take a numismatic journey to Long Island where there are still a bunch of small old fashioned shops with interesting finds....
in NY you can also visit the ANS...
and if you are in NY around the 3rd Wed of the month, you are welcome to come up from the city to the Westchester County Coin Club monthly meeting which is now held at the Eastchester Library ...have a great trip!
