I'll write this as PC as possible: you couldn't be more off base about Bochiman.
As some have already posted, our activity levels in numismatics ebbs and flows -- just a fact of life sometimes. I had not ben active since 2006/2007 time frame and now coming back in.
Frankly, in the last month I've posted about as much as I used to post in a couple days the last time around.
Right or wrong, this place is like a rock and while there will be times when it's better or worse, it is still here and serves a purpose.
Also our tastes and level of knowledge changes over time and what used to be exciting 5-10 years ago may no longer be new and exciting.
For example, guess the grade threads are like playing with a cat, the same thing over and over and over....definitely fun for some, but maybe blah or downright painful for others.
The TPG and eBay bashing threads -- amazing that in nearly the last decade, nothing has really changed Same topics, different circumstances, and people are shocked like it's the first time.
Basically, nothing has really changed...and for some, the basics are great! while for others, maybe they seek more advanced conversations or topics ... these forums (nor others for that matter) are not really ideal for the latter, which can also rationalize some of the observations.
One interesting observation having been gone for a little while, from my vantage point we appear to be in somewhat of a cycle in numismatics that could be described as a heard mentality. As long as you are in the heard, you are in the majority but if you are not in the heard, well...you get the idea.
Anyhow, I am grateful that these forums are still here even though at the moment maybe the kind of threads we used to have might be fewer in numbers, but they will come back -- just realize when they do and don't bash them else you risk having them dwindle even less...

Here we go now this thread got interesting. As to the bring back the banned thing, I have read on other forums from some that have been banned that thay were asked back and declined, so you can lead a poster to the forum but you cannot make him post.
I would add that some of the active, and sometimes controversial thread starters (Russ, Longacre, and SaintGuru, for example), and some of the interesting personalities (Anaconda, Legend, StewartBlay) are no longer active participants.
An interesting, dynamic, outrageous thread creates interest, buzz, and additional interesting threads. Dull, lifeless threads lead to a dull, lifeless forum community.
absolutely correct - PCGS has done the boards a huge disservice by knocking off some of the best names in board interest all around.
Yes its their boards - but there is something called logic too.
It was fun knocking Laura or agreeing with Laura! As an example. It was the go to in the morning thingy to do, and many times over.
Most I know including myself have long abandoned that lovely chore...to a mere few clicks a week if not a month.
I want to pick a fight...but gosh darn it...can't think of a reason why. I enjoy the threads (mostly on subjects I have no direct interest in or not enough money to add to my collection or
otherwise get involved in) just for the education, analysis, and historical significance of each coin. I'll never (probably, dealing with reality) figure out die pairings or the details of the
minting processes. I don't have that much time to invest in trying to catch up this late in life. So, what marginal knowledge I have on these things, I have learned on these forum
threads. I will always be a newbie but I do carry a sponge. I have benefited in various ways through my involvement here, from being alerted to great mint buys leading to profitable
flips or developing an interest in vams on Morgans or of course the 2009 Lincoln doubled dies. I've tried to join the dialogue when I thought I had something pertinent to say and kept
quiet when it was time to learn. I have stood my ground when I thought I was right and acknowledged with humility when I was wrong. There are some that go out of their way to poo
poo someone else's area of interest (i.e. MODERNS) or knowledge about a subject but generally I think most people are like me that are simply here to learn about a multitude of subjects
and have a cordial conversation or a humorous banter. Speaking of which, PennyLady, I'm inviting you to join our conversation about the 2009p Lincoln Formative doubled dies. They
are now featured in the new pro Red Book. I'd love to hear your point of view; after all, you're the PennyLady. One can't live on '55 doubled dies all of their life, can they? (humorous
banter). Again, thanks for all of the knowledge and wisdom that's been imparted freely through the years. A doubled thumbs up to you all!
As a longtime member here, I have seen many, including myself, stray away from the forums for any given length of time.
This is my observation:
When I first joined up here, there were many people who made the new guy feel welcome.
Over time, I think egos began to kick in and it all became a contest to see who could out-do the others. This is when the real jerks began to show up and for a long while, if it wasn't a super rarity or a 70, people were treated like their coin was junk. I would often see newbies come on here, many having inherited, or otherwise acquired, a collection and was looking for information as to whether or not to sell or keep. Many times, the reply they received was to either buy a book, which basically tells them nothing except what they "might" get for their collection or to "send it to a dealer" who "might" give you a fair price.
For awhile, it seemed that the forum was simply a place to peddle wares, under the guise of "Hey look what I just posted pictures of on my coin selling website!" Even though the mods and administrators posted rules against things, they were allowed to get by with it.
I have only recently begun reading the boards on a daily basis again, having lurked in the background for several years and am pleased to see that the board to be shifting back to one where a newbie might venture in to get information without the fear of being ridiculed or driven away. It's a nice change.
