    Sorry to say it's a man-made novelty item;
it was gold plated after it left the Mint.

Sorry - if you say you found it in an original
US Mint Set, then it's toned, obviously.

I didn't read your full description when I first
    sent my reply above

Probably from one of those HSN/Coin Vault plated sets they used to do for everything... on the upside, it's worth at least 25 cents.

When clad tones it often tones golden colored.

The deepest golds tend to be on the smoothest Unc surfaces. '76 issues are not uncommon like this even though this one isn't all that smooth surfaced.

There are some reds and blues and even purple but yellows and golds are typical.

No...in the first post, he says it was in the mint set plastic and he cut it out.

On a side note, I have seen this type of toning for the quarters and halves in the '75 and '76 sets, so not surprised.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I have never seen one like that before....interesting... would love to see the results of an SEM done on the surface....Cheers, RickO
  • SEM on the surface? Here is the Half from the set still in the wrap. It shows the gold toning also but not as much as the quarter.

Boy, that half is ugly. I wouldn't be surprised if that's a '75 mint set but they come even worse than this in both dates quite often.

The '68 to '84 mint sets have a thin layer of bad plastic inside the mylar so most of these should be stabilized in acetone for long term storage.

  • So should I give these a dip in acetoneand will that remove the toning because I kind of like it.

No. Do not dip them. Just let them be.

BTW, acetone would have no effect since the color is a metallic reaction to air and not an organic substance.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

It's not necessary now to dip it and acetone won't remove the color but there is
probably plastic residue on the coin which will cause trouble in the long term. A
surprising number of coins from the '75 mint sets already have problems though
they aren't nearly as bad as the '68 or '69.

The half dollar is hardly worth the cost of the acetone. Even in fairly choice condition
it is pretty common and there are millions that look like this.
