I was recently asked whether I had a 1922-D Lincoln cent with a "Broken D" variety. Does anyone have a decent photo of this variety?

    I'd love to see it.
I've been doing Lincolns over 50 years and it's always nice to learn.

I've never seen a broken D. Supposedly it is only the weak D variety (die pairs 1, 3, 4) and is some intermediate state, with grease filling and falling from the 2.

I don't think any of the TPG's recognize it but I could be wrong.

The "Broken D" is what a Weak D used to be called.

I have a 1938 black Whitman coin board, silver lettering and red backside. These were made prior to the 3 page folders.
There are 2 spaces for the 1922-D. First a regular 22-D, next to that is a space marked 1922-D "Broken D".
So the term broken D dates back to at least 1938.

Actually it goes back to just after 1922 when the missing D was discovered, but the "broken D" term is a Weak D now days.

Thank you for the info - once again, I learned something new on these boards!

I saw one years ago that was in a 1922 "Plain" certification holder many years ago. At certain angles the mint mark looked a tiny lump. At other angles you could see the "D" all be it that it was mushy.

Back then (the late 1980s) I was not a big fan of slabbing, and this piece shook my faith in the accuracy of the service.
