Introducing Rare American Coins and NEWPS
Greeting PCGS Forum Members! This is Gerry Fortin and I've been away from the PCGS forum for several years to concentrate on Liberty Seated Collector Club and launching my own rare coin business. Many of you know me as the Seated dime researcher and publisher of Seated Dime Web-book at www.seateddimevarieties.com
Effective January 2013, I've retired from the semiconductor business. 35 years in the semiconductor industry is enough for one lifetime and now I can focus on my passion which is Liberty Seated coinage. In the April timeframe, I launched Rare American Coins, LLC with show debut at the Chicago ANA. Next up is the Whitman Baltimore show starting tomorrow Nov7. I will have my entire seated coinage and panda inventory at the show. My business model is simple. Offer customers and consignors great personal service with super photography and competitive market pricing.
Following is a list of NEWPS and important consignor seated coins available at www.SeatedDimeVarieties.com and at the Baltimore show, Table 1505. Hope you can stop by and say hello...... Thanks, Gerry

NEWPS or Consigned Inventory - November 6, 2013
Seated Dimes
1840 No Drap EF 45 $165 New! F-105, Eye Appeal and Contrasting Toning. 1840 No Drapery dimes are always in demand and I was pleased to be able to purchase this specimen. Obverse has a decent strike and eye appeal resulting from light gray fields and darker highlights at the rims and around Liberty. Reverse is toned a more even light gray. There is slight strike weakness at Stars 12-13 but otherwise a nice F-105 example for a Dansco set.
1840 Drapery NGC MS 62 $4,950 New! F-101, R7 in Mint State. One of the premier mint state dates in the Liberty Seated Dime series and rarely offered in the market. This example was purchased back in 1997 and has been the www.seateddimevarieties.com plate coin since 2004. This specimen features deeper brown/gray obverse toning while the reverse has a lighter appearance with the same color. Field are clean with the obverse luster being a bit muted leading to the MS62 grade. A Heritage auction archives review reveals that the last MS62 examples to sell at auction between 1995 and today occurred during 2006. A PCGS MS62 brought $7000 while an NGC example brought $4300. This specimen was purchased from a western US dealer on private basis.

1843-O PCGS F 15 $595 New! F-101, Original and Just Back from PCGS. Nice even medium gray obverse patina with the reverse being a bit darker. Eye appeal is good with the right balance between field coloring and the lighter main devices. Has the look of a VF20 dime but PCGS believes it to be Fine 15.

1855 VF 30 $125 New! F-103, Early Die State, Doubled Die Obverse, Top 100 Varieties #40. Light to medium gray toning across obverse and reverse with bold strike. Die doubling on shield is quite pronounced with doubling on all vertical shield lines and the right outer shield edge. Even the gold folders abover pendant show some doubling. Problem free dime.

1856 Sm Date ANACS VF 20 $85 New! F-110, Double Die Obverse North, Original, Top 100 Varieties #42. A strictly original example with the obverse doubling being obvious. Surfaces are toned an even medium gray. Actually under graded by ANACS as closer to VF30 with strong obverse breast and leg details. Housed in new gold ANACS holder with the Fortin - 110 and Doubled Die Obverse on the label. This is first time I've seen a TPG use the Fortin variety designation on a label and quite pleased with progressing market acceptance of the Top 100 Varieties.
1856 Large Date PCGS EF 40 CAC $115 New! F-101, Choice and Original with CAC Green Bean. Light gun metal toning on the obverse while reverse is silver appearance with light gold. Under a loupe, the reverse die bridge between (DI)ME and heavy die flash around ribbon bow loops is seen.

1856-O PCGS EF 45 $185 New! F-104, Repunched Date Up, Wayte Raymond Coin Board Toning. Top 100 Varieties #43 with full obverse and reverse diagnostics. This dime has exceptional eye appeal with the Wayte Raymond type bulls eye toning pattern and PCGS certifying the originality.

1856-S PCGS VF 30 $1,150 New! F-101, Original and Accurately Graded. More difficult that 1858-S in terms of rarity and infrequently seen in choice circulated grades. From the images, this dime's originality is obvious. The obverse is toned an even gray/rose with some darker highlights around the stars. The reverse is simply gorgeous with gray fields surrounding the wreath and legend. As for variety, this is obviously the early F-101 die state with repunching visible under the S mintmark crossbar. PCGS guide is $1000 VF25, $1200, VF30 and $1400 VF35 as a reference.

1863-S VF 25 $325 New! F-101, Kansas Collection. Even light to medium gray toning throughout obverse and reverse. Nice strong reverse rims while the obverse has typical weakness above OF AMER. Liberty's knee is rounded leading to a solid VF grade.

1865-S PCGS VF 30 $935 New! F-102a, Original and Under Graded. A choice 1865-S dime that is under graded in present holder. Please note the original gray/brown patina that cover both obverse and reverse. Under a light, peripheral blues come to life. Now let's talk about grade. When I bought this dime, I immediately noted the under grading but could rationalize how PCGS grader arrived at VF30 decision. The F-102a variety is known for a weakly struck head and the reverse is late die state with fully eroded denticles and weak wreath. However is one looks carefully at the strength of the obverse (STATES OF) and the obverse and reverse rims, they are stronger than VF30 designation. Also compare the F-102a web-book plate coin with offered coin. The offer dime is at least VF35. Finally, there is a trace of the 12:00 rim cud on this dime if one knows where to look.

1867 PR64 $1,500 New! F-101, Choice Original Rare Die Variety!, a wonderful example of the rare 1867 date placement variety first highlighted by Kam Ahwash during 1977 from a specimen submitted by Andrew Mesaros. The Obverse 1 date is positioned slight lower and further left than on Obverse 2. The pendant is directly above the inner edge of the left upright of the 6 digit. For this variety, Greer states "Ahwash listed these as business strikes, but those I have seen have had proof characteristics". I've inspected this dime and agree with Greer that F-101 variety does come as a proof. The offered dime sports obverse rose/lavendar toning while the reverse toning is ring like at the periphery. Fields have no hairlines and are flashy under light.

1868 ANACS MS 62 $750 New! F-104a, White ANACS Holder. Business strike from proof dies resulting in highly reflective fields. A very well struck dime with full head characteristics and reverse wreath details. Obverse is toned a light to medium rose color while the reverse is mostly light rose/gray. From my reference collection and purchased during 2000. Employed as web-book plate coin until having access to Eugene Gardner's wonderful NGC MS65 images. A most difficult variety to locate given that finding 1868 dimes in Mint State is not an easy task.

1868 EF 45 $75 New! F-104a, Business Strike from Proof Dies, Rose/Gray Tone. Trying to reduce my 1868 duplicates as accumulated a large quantity for die variety research. The offered dime is a well detailed 1868 example from proof dies with decent eye appeal. Surfaces are reflective under the light rose toning. Some of the random lines typical for this variety are seen within the shield and on Liberty's mid section.

1871 PCGS PR 64 $1,250 New! F-101, Repunched 18, Proof Dies Only, Top 100 Varieties #55. From my collection and purchased 2003 timeframe. Typical striking characteristics for the variety will bold date and repunching. Obverse fields are clean with a light gray patina that turns to blue/rose at the rim. Reverse is more colorful with rose center turning to gray/blue into the wreath. Why is this dime only PF64? The grade is due to this varieties' soft striking characteristic at Liberty's head since the fields show no hairlines or defects. There is also strike doubling on head, STATES and OF.

Seated Quarters
1840 With Drapery EF 45 $350 New! Virginia Collection, Choice For Grade. Light gray and lavendar obverse toning while the reverse has blue flash in the fields. The 1840 With Drapery hub is transitional and identifying which of the three reverse die hubs used to strike this quarter is challenging. The reverse does have die scratch in the denticles above the right serif of (U)NITED and obverse stars 1-2 and 9-13 exhibit defects or repunching. This would suggest the difficult Reverse B variety but will be confirm at the early November Baltimore show.

1843 EF 45 $210 New! Briggs 2-C, Virginia Collection, Lightning Bolt Reverse, with right die crack through AME(RI)CA forming a nice internal cud before entering wing. Even light gray toning throughout with some darker areas. Fields are clean.

1844-O EF 40 $290 New! Briggs 1-A, Virginia Collection, Clipped Planchet. Darker even gray/brown highlights this interesting piece with obvious clipped planchet at 8:00. On the reverse, the planchet clip is more pronounced at 10:00 with opposite Blaskesley effect visible at 4:00.

1845 NGC AU 55 CAC $385 New! Virginia Collection, Briggs 4-D and So Original! CAC green been validates the original surfaces covers by gray patina. Clashed dies are obvious with articfacts on obverse and reverse. As with all Virginia quarters, the strike is strong and compliments the originality. For complete accuracy, there is a toned over reverse line through the vertical shield lines that does not detract in any way.

1849 PCGS AU 55 $525 New! Virginia Collection, Hammer Strike! Briggs 1-A, All white with incredible devices throughout. On obverse, Liberty's neckline gown folds are sharply defined as are all the hair curls. Each star shows halo'ing due to strong strike. The reverse is Compass Point and cracked with multiple die cracks through bottom of QUAR Dollar to left dentils below (U)NITED. A faint die crack is noted through top of STATES. Once again, the reverse is so sharply struck with each eagle feather being fully defined. The only anomaly to note is light chatter lines in the upper left field between eagle's head and (STA)TES otherwise the fields a free from blemishes. Finally, this is a low mintage date at 340,000 pieces.

1853 Arrows & Rays PCGS AU 58 $825 New! Virginia Collection, Incredible Deep Rainbow Toning! Simply an incredible type coin with all necessary parameters of strike, toning, eye appeal and luster at optimal conditon. Let's take them one by one. The toning is original multi color with baseline gold turning to blues, greens, rose and some gray. The reverse is a multi color rainbow with class. Then the luster is there and peeks through the toning when flashing this quarter under any lighting. Moving on to strike, the obverse and reverse have complete device details. Overall eye appeal is wonderful and any collector would be proud to display this coin. Finally, the obverse is cracked with a bold die crack from right arrow through foot to rim.

1859-S PCGS VG 8 $850 New! Rare and Perfect For Assigned Grade. A Virginia Collection offering that is so choice plus strong eye appeal for an assigned VG8 grade. I don't believe a serious collector could find a nicer VG8 specimen that this coin. A difficult date with low 80,000 mintage; most low grade surviving examples are found with problems. If one does some research, pricing escalates quickly with VG10s being auctioned for $1000+.

1860-O AU 50 $250 New! Broken O Reverse, Briggs 2-B LDS and So Original. Was pleased to acquire such an original example of the Broken O reverse with medium gray/brown toning. All reverse feathers on eagle are sharp but only the top 30% of thin O mintmark is visible per variety. This quarter would be fully choice except for a faint set of toned over lines to the right of LIberty's knee that require a 16x loupe to notice. Priced between PCGS EF45 and AU50 pricing guide.

1874 With Arrows PCGS AU 55 $625 New! Virginia Collection, Fully Struck White Specimen. Blemish free fields and nice luster highlight this PQ quarter. As with all the Virginia quarters, a full strike is paramount and this 1874 quarter is no exception. Obverse and reverse dies are clashed and lightly rusted with the most obvious die erosion around QUAR DOL. A superior quarter for serious collector who desires combination of strike, luster and eye appeal.

1891-S PCGS AU 58 $385 New! Virginia Collection, PQ Luster and Eye Appeal. Looks fully MS63 or higher in hand and one of nicest AU58 seated quarters I've seen. Fields are clean and crisp with huge luster. The strike is stong and covered with a light rose tone. Though a common date, don't miss the opportunity to add this coin to your collection.

Seated Halves
1872-CC PCGS VF 35 $1,650 New! Virginia Collection, WB-7, Original Toning. Another superior specimen from the Virginia Collection that has been off the market for years. This desirable 1872 Carson City half sports even gun metal gray toning throughout the obverse and reverse. Strike details are strong especially on the reverse eagle feathers. Field are blemish free and choice.

1873-CC With Arrows PCGS VF 25 $1,250 New! Virginia Collection, WB-3, Small CC and Original. Medium gray patina covers both the obverse and reverse surfaces. Reverse is well struck and presents strong eagle feathers for the assigned VF25 grade while the obverse has VF wear. Original Carson City half dollars are always in demand and this one should fit nicely into a date set without breaking the bank.
