Am I seeing things - DDR?

Don't trust my eyes on this. Not listed for this date but maybe or is it machine doubling?

Probably machine doubling but does it really matter? When you need that much magnification to see a variety and still have to wonder about it it just isn't very important.

More and more collectors, unable to afford significant rare coins, seem to be trying to create their own rarities by finding minor varieties. There are many, many minor varieties in 19th century US coinage.

Longacre Doubling. The doubling was actually part of the die - an attempt to prolong its life, IIRC.

  • Thanks for the info on Longacre doubling, had not heard of that yet. The extreme magnification was for the benefit of my elders.
