Filled another hold in the Lincoln Dansco- with a key! (now...is it real???) MORE close up photos at
Been on a bit of a shopping spree lately......
Filled one of the gaping holes in my Lincoln Dansco with this raw purchase today....
My first of this date/MM...
It's not perfect and the photos magnify some issues I didn't notice up front. Still think it's pretty nice though....
Guess I'll have to take a rose thorn to the Verdigris spots in the letters though...
Picked up a couple of other goodies as well... You only live once!

So the question now is........
Is it real???? Any of the Lincoln experts care to offer their opinions based on higher res photos I've attached:
Thank you so much for your help....

Very choice coin and one you will enjoy for years to come!
I like the idea of key dates vs easy dates in some of these Dansco holes.

I like the idea of key dates in the holes as well...
This one is actually a nicer coin than many of my other early year Lincoln cents. Likely going to inspire me to upgrade them now....

If I may ask, nwcoast, how do you know your coin is real?

<< <i>Nice piece. From die #1.This coin definitely looks real to me.

Well, good question....
Since it's raw, and I'm not an expert, I'm just going by my intuition and taking a gamble. I studied the coin with a loop and compared it to some images of authentic coins sold at auction and the images in CoinFacts. It came out of an old Lincoln collection album which was complete and had belonged to a long time collector that had passed away recently. Thought about picking up the 22 Plain and 14- d but they were too weak..
Could be counterfeit I suppose...
I trust one of the experts on here will call me out if they suspect as much.

Nice work!

How do you learn about all these different die's?

<< <i>Congrats! As a fellow Lincoln collector, I can appreciate your story. There's nothing more exciting than filling that hole with the Big Kahuna. When I first got a real job and started making a few bucks, that was my first major coin purchase. I still have it 25 years later. If you post some larger images, the board members will let you know if it's real. >>
Bumped for larger images and hopefully, help of Forum/Lincoln experts as to whether I'm OK with this one.....
Thank you for the opportunity to learn....

60 years into this hobby and I'm still working on my Lincoln set!
Lance.
From this forum.
As far as I know there were 3 working dies for 1909-S V.B.D. obverse.Placement and tilt of the "s" mintmark must match exactly with one of the only three obverse dies used.
The "s" on nw's coin is an exact match with the "s" from die #1. Happily, the V.D.B. on 1909-S V.D.B. is distinctly different from the V.D.B. on 1909 Philadelphia cents.V.D.B. does look good on nw's coin.
You should be able to find this information in the archives here.

My Collection of Old Holders
Never a slave to one plastic brand will I ever be.
So nice to hear that I haven't been taken by one of the many 'alternate' versions of this classic coin.
It's also nice that it holds a special spot in my long vacant Dansco... Now, I only have the 14-D and 22 Plain to fill...... and of course the upgrades of some others to clean up the set and make for a better match to this one...
As Ricko says....Cheers

I like the overall look. Very appealing.

I cannot tell from the picture. But if it is not there, you may have a problem.
Why would you suspect otherwise?

I hadn't actually considered it until one of the forum members put the bug in my ear and reminded me that there are so many counterfeits out there......
I was fairly confident, but not certain, that it was the real thing...

...looks like the real deal and congrats! I trust you'll send it in to be slabbed. then you'll be convinced it is authentic.
<< <i>Can you see a tiny die crack on the inside upper loop of the "s?"
I cannot tell from the picture. But if it is not there, you may have a problem.
Don't have the magnification handy to confirm this, but looking at an enlarged section of the photo and with my strongest loop, I cannot see any die crack.
Looking closely, it looks like the area is slightly filled, so any crack would likely be obscured. Hopefully this isn't something I should worry about....... I don't think it is.
Everything else checks out as far as I can tell...
Thanks though.... Hopefully, this isn't something new to be concerned about......
Wasn't planning on having it slabbed until a much later date, or at some point if I'm needing to part with it.... I like the way it looks in my Dansco....
Most here are with me that it's authentic. I hope we're correct.

one should always be on-guard with these key dates. i didn't see anything that i thought was a problem, even from the original small images posted in the op. if it is bad, it is one for the books.
.
Now that you know... it's all good. . . enjoy your new purchase!
It's a beaut.

<< <i>Just in case here is a pic of one just like yours that is authentic
And you can clearly see the die crack.
I hate burst your bubble, but I think your coin is 1909 VDB with an added "S."
I base this on there being no die crack, and the fact that there is the slight circular discoloration around the mint mark that is commonly seen when a mint mark has been added.
I would send it to our host, or return it if you can.

Well, you've put a small hole in my bubble and inspired me to shoot some higher mag photos.....
Does this little bump in the upper margin qualify as a "die crack"? I'm thinking maybe it is.......more so than maybe it isn't...

If it's fake, it's a darn good fake. I'd pay cash on the spot for that coin.

Yes indeed!
Showed up nicely in the photo.. Better than I could even see with my 10x loupe.
Thank you for pinning this down....

<< <i>that looks like a nice coin to me. are you sure you need to use a rose thorn on it? that just looks like dirt in there to me. >>
...sure wouldn't like to hear that the mint mark came off if you went near it!
