Trying out a new camera for coin pics…..

LakesammmanLakesammman Posts: 17,445 ✭✭✭✭✭
Not really a macro camera but thought it would be fun to try.

New camera on bottom, old CoolPix 995 on top. Haven't optimized all settings yet - just getting familiar with it. image

Likely the new camera won't make a big difference. Unless you upgrade to one with a decent macro and spend some time playing with lighting and your editor.

Put the worst camera in the hands of Mark G. or Messydesk or Bob C. or Todd and you will be impressed with their results.

    Don't stop trying!

New camera, or just trying it BEFORE drinking a 6-pack instead of after? image

(as mentioned, focus looks much better)

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

  • the lighting on the bottom is nicer also what is the total set up?

    Nice coin and images.

In addition to the camera, the light position shows off the coin better on the second one.

Just remember, most important is the LENS! image
I like large size currency and silver dollars.

I like both photos but the hair details are really sharp on the lower... Heck I'd be thrilled finding either in a box of Kellogg corn flakes! imageimage

I can't really say much about the camera but the bottom pic is in better focus and the lighting is also better or I guess the new camera could be handling the given light better. New toys are always fun, congrats!

So what's it like using a camera that doesn't use floppy disks? Those must have been hard to come by.

The photos on the bottom are a big improvement, but the actual camera is probably the least important part of the equation. The more important parts would be the lens, lighting, stable platform, editing software, and not least of all, experience.

3.2MP is too low to be competitive.
Anything 10MP or higher is high enough, i.e. any Canon or Nikon DSLR.
Combining with what a prior post implied, a 10MP camera with a good lens and lighting
and a person who knows how to use it should be as good as anything with more MP.

Rereading Goodman's book as well - there's a wealth of information in there!

I like the higher contrast lighting on the second one - really brings out the details of the hair, crown, name, etc.

Definite improvement but you have appreciate the job that old workhorse Coolpix 995 did with 3.2 mp.

Once images are reduced to posting acceptable size the 7-8 times higher megapixels only looks about twice as good image

megapixel count has nothing to do with it IMO

Now you only need a nice coin to image. image Nice before and after, and an absolutely killer coin.
