Home U.S. Coin Forum

Same coin. Twice sold by Heritage 9 months apart. Very different results.

Both times, this coin was sold in a Sunday Internet Live session as part of a bigger auction event. Both with identical images.

In February for $2585
This Sunday for $881

I have no idea what the explanation is, but it's a curious discrepancy in price.
I like large size currency and silver dollars.

Someone thought they were going to get an upgrade?

    OR

A toning buy that did not treat them well on resale?

    OR

Someone thought they were going to own it forever, they needed to sell it and got unlucky?

    OR

    .........?

In any case, overpaying hurt with this example. WOW!

My first assumption is in the first sale at least two bidders liked the coin a bit too much either for the toning or for the upgrade potential.

Or someone bid up their own coin with a high reserve and set a market price then put it on with no reserve hoping others would see the previous selling price and pay that much. This is done at car auctions a lot.

In the narrow area I watch...it seemed like auction results were all fairly soft.

In 65 that coin is a 3k coin. That is my guess for the first time.
Second time same thing- just at a much lower gamble level
may the fonz be with you...always...

My guess - someone thought the toning was worth $2585, the $881 is closer to the value w/ CAC & toning.

    Color mania is fickle.

And in reply to the question "is it worth $881?"... my answer is an emphatic no.
    When in doubt, don't.

What exactly does "Make offer to owner" mean?

I'm unclear on this aspect of HA prices realized.

Exactly what it says--just push the button and you can make a ridiculous offer to the owner to try to buy the coin. Usually the minimum offer is always 20% or more over the price realized. I do not know why Heritage offers this service but my thinking is that at their auctions, since the high bidder was not outbid anyone else who wanted the coin already put in his highest bid and certainly does not want to pay 20 % or more above the price realized for it-unless maybe quite a few years down the road.
If you push the make offer to owner button on this coin the minimum offer is $1056. You can offer more. I, personally, do not think that the coin is worth more than $500. But maybe someone out there will still pay moon money for toning. Not I.

It means that the owner would be willing to sell the coin and would pay Heritage a commish to do so. There are those folks who forget to turn that feature off.

I am going to say that the loss of interest in toned coins would have some impact, but not that much!

Further one can list some or all of his inventory with the Heritage MyCollection feature and use it as a way offer, advertise, list coins for sale. >>
