Rhodium @ $975

Lowest price in 13 years.

According to Wikipedia: In 2012, 81% of the world production of rhodium was consumed to produce three-way catalytic converters.[24] Rhodium shows some advantages over the other platinum metals in the reduction of nitrogen oxides to nitrogen and oxygen:[29]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhodium

With gold at $1300, platinum at $1450, and palladium at $740, rhodium seems like the buy of a lifetime.

Unfortunately, the spread of (only recently made available) rhodium ounce bars and rounds is very high. Recent closed auctions run ~$1300.

Tempted? Own some already?

I am tempted, I doubt though that there is a wide market for Rhodium bars.
Provident sells the 1oz for $1114 and the tenth oz for $183.
I have only seen Baird & co. branded bars so far.
Any other brand besides Cohen Mint which is not as appealing to me?

Interest how Rhodium has disconnected from Palladium in price, even though both are largely industrial metals.

Is there any good place to buy physical Rhodium near spot?

Not tempted. I personally see platinum as the sleeper. While catalytic converters only require grams of platinum, hydrogen fuel cell power will require much more of it. Toyota already has plans to sell them in 2015.

is part of the reason for the large spread on rhodium bars (in addition to the thin market) that the metallic rhodium bar must be reprocessed back into rhodium "sponge" or granules in order to be useful industrially? It is also relatively brittle with a high melting point. And looks like silver only not as pretty. and so obscure that the list number of buyers at any price is very few (thin market), and also it would be easily counterfeited and not subject to the usual touchstone/acid tests. I'd consider a piece as part of an Element collection, but not as a bullion investment.

a fund maybe as a speculative flyer, but still, given the history, there are better fishing grounds, all of the above IMHO

I will stick with gold and silver..... in time of financial distress, they will be a medium of exchange.... Rhodium will likely gain in value as the tech needs escalate but would not likely be a good 'currency' in needy times. Cheers, RickO

Probably worth investing in... but not advisable for me since the learning curve is too steep for me, given the identified problems listed above. I'll stick with the ones I know fairly well.

I feel better in metals that have some liquidity, and platinum works for me in terms of relative scarcity, industrial utility and an active market.

Your quote on December 16, 2008, a date to remember, crazy ride since.

    Gold $860
    Platinum $860
    Rhodium $860
    Amazing!

    We stock them:

    Rhodium at MCM

Agreed, premiums are high but not surprising as it is thinly traded.

    Old article, but interesting

Somewhat annoying guy talks about rhodium, the comments below the video might be of more interest:
