US gold coinage made for circulation is 90% gold and alloyed primarily with various amounts of copper and silver. The copper and silver still tone.

US Gold Eagles are 22k not 24k

but even some .9999 US Mint gold has colored up - surface contamination or 0.0001 alloy toning is suspected.

Time and other elements, like copper and the environment causes toning on gold coins. Something has to change or it wouldn't.

In that case it may be some contaminates on the surface.

As stated above, AGE's have silver and copper....= tarnish..... pure gold will only discolor due to surface contaminants. Cheers, RickO

think about gold rings and how they change color untill cleaned it is a reaction with what could be considered the impurities in the gold that are actually oxidizing and thusly causing the so called toning.

Not really relevant. Jewelry has a much higher alloy content compared to gold coins so you would expect it to tone especially when it's in contact with your body.
