Castle

Last night I watched the most recent episode of the T.V. show "Castle". The plot of the story involved a hidden cache of 1792 half Dismes. They showed one close up, and of course it was a replica, but whoever made them actually did a pretty decent job.

They pronounced it "half dime", but the closeup was clearly of the half disme design.

My guess is that "controversy" ever will there be.

ahh, it warms my heart to know there are those out there that know that while speculative, at least it isn't pronounced diz-me.

<< <i>My info is that disme is a corruption of dixieme meaning one-tenth, and is pronounced "deem". I've also read that its etymological root is from a word in Dutch

I think that "dime" is actually a corruption of the word disme. They are both pronounced the same--The "s" was dropped because it is a silent letter. The pronunciation "diz-me" is incorrect.

<< <i>Does anyone on the CU Forum have an inside connection with ABC? I would like to know how they acquired the copies, how many did they have, and what happened to them after taping the episode. My email question to ABC got a form-letter non-response. >>
Yes, that's me on the right.
I'll get in touch with someone from the show and try and find out.

<< <i>I liked how they mentioned that one sold at auction for $1.5 million and naturally assumed that each coin found was going to be worth the same amount in spite of adding a thousand or so more to the population.

Good point. A very rare coin can become common over night when a large hoard is found. This happened with several Morgan dollar dates when the treasury released several million dollars from their vaults.
