A passionate plea to NYC and LI forum members-PLEASE HELP!!

Wednesday November 6th is the next scheduled meeting of the Gold Coast Coin Club and possibly the last. I have been trying to promote the new club for the past year and need to decide if it will continue.

I would like all forum members in the area to attend this meeting to see if the club can be made to thrive. The few members who do attend are very smart and know their stuff!

Please pm me if you can make this meeting at 7pm at North Shore High School at 450 Glen Cove Avenue in Glen Head, NY

  • I was actually thinking of coming to show my support...until I realized that was the day I travel to Baltimore. Unfortunately for you so will a lot of others. Gonna be tough.

I wish you and your club the best.

I am the guy from Ct and I love the meeting - all the speakers that had previously attended were great and very informative.

Sorry, its a bad day for me as I will be in Jersey. Please keep this club going as I will plan on attending future meetings!!

Say hello to everyone in attendance for me!

I appreciate your fine remarks! I only wish others would give our club a chance. I think people would find it worthwhile to join.

I have heard from no one saying they are coming. How about some new members for this wednesday.

Gettiing a club started is tough. It was even tough back in the 1970s before the Internet. Now with more things going on people have less time for "brick and mortar" based activities.

It has been my experience that the best way to get people to come to meeting is to offer collectors opportunities to add to their collections. Three of the strongest clubs to which I have ever belonged had either a fair size bourse at the meeting, an active auction or both.

I've belonged to some other clubs of moderate to very advanced collectors who were into presentations and knowledge. That really only works for people with large collections who have been active in the hobby for years.

Currently I am the educational director at my local club. I speak most months with a Power Point visual aid. The club also has an active auction.

The trouble is many of the members, including me, are retirement age. We do have several YNs however who are very active. One of them is the club secretary. Still we don't get the 30 to 50 year old people on a regular basis.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
