What's your opinion on the 314 Leather pouch Peace$$ hoard

I have been reading up on the NGC 314 Toned peace leather bag horde
I wanted some opinions on the Market acceptability and resale of these peace $$ horde
I know some claim AT others NT about this horde, but how are they treated when they're for sale on the floor at a coin show, what's your reaction?
I only ask since there's two up for auction via Kryptonitecomics, and I'm fairly interested in them. But worried about my ability to liquidate them in the future.
Looking forward to learning more about coins from fellow well respected numismatists

I mentioned in another thread that the "story" sure does change through the years on these. When did the story of the leather pouch come about, and from where?

I'm very familiar with this rather large "hoard" of Peace dollars. I always called it the 3144-3145, now i see it's called the 314. Looking forward to hear about this newer story of leather pouch.

In my experience, leather does not impart nice toning. It is dark, and thick.

what Becky said with the addition of a question-----Why is it that with every "Hoard" there is the need for a good story and attendant catchy nickname??

Every time I have purchase coins which have been stored in leather, the coins were toned in an ugly "tobacco spit" brown color. The ones I have sent for grading to both major services have been placed in no problem holders. To me, the toning is not appealing, but I consider it NT, as it was not done intentionally.

    Yes, often green and scummy.

This thread is useless without pictures!

pictures would be helpful, but the ones I have seen do not reflect the type of tone that we associate with leather.

I agree with keets and CaptHenway, pictures of the coins in question would be great for this thread. The coin I saw posted in a thread across the street was not leather toned. It appeared to be edge toned from an album.

  • I have found that impassioned tone heads often market a story along with their more vivid and atypical coins in an attempt to bridge the gap from AT to NT to increase the coins acceptance. 99.9999999% of these stories are anecdotal and unverifiable and should be ignored and the coin judged on it's own stand alone merits. All the stories in the world will not help many of the wild/vividly toned coins in NGC holders cross to PCGS holders.

Are these the two 1924 NGC 314XXX Peace listings from kryptonitecomics you are asking about?

Five listings total for Peace dollar from kryptonitecomics, three 1922 and two 1924 colored / toned.

I don't see any claim to leather pouch hoarde in the two 1924 listings.

This is a coin that was stored in a small leather change purse. It did not have direct contact with the leather, but was wrapped in tissue paper. If I am not mistaken, this came out of a collection I purchase in the Charlestown/Martinsburg, WV area.

Al, was there a name attached to those blue proof Jeffersons from a few years ago? I not sure but I thought they were given a name.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

The coin that I had posted ats and here as well had a similar response as yours.

Most felt the toning was album, and that the coin had a very different look than other 314 peace dollars that had been viewed.

I was unaware of the leather pouch rumor when I bought the coin and I feel it is just that. Rumor.

Many responses were that these coins were AT do to the fact there were so many and all 1924. I disagree that they were AT, perhaps a storage issue is to blame? I have know idea how these would have been stored at the mint or a bank. Perhaps someone can weigh in?

My take, which may differ from your take, is that these things are AT all the way:

This is typical leather pouch toning, I believe. I have never heard of this 314-thing.

I have always referenced them as the MartyHoard for reasons which need no explanation.

I replied in haste and hadn't read some of the other replies, but the coin Lance has pictured is what I have always associated with leather influenced toning, coins spending time in a pouch or something made of leather. also, a thought or two that comes to mind regarding these coins and the natural AT inclination-----HRH has always said that he wasn't aware of nicely toned or rainbow type Peace Dollars, principally due to the nature of the way they were stored over the years. recently there seems to be a large number of attractively toned Peace Dollars, all common dates(of course), so the inclination is to presume AT since this is the Age-of-the-Doctor. with this hoard and the story that inclination is only enhanced for a skeptic like me.

Here is mine. I have posted it before when this topic comes up. Nothing extraordinary in the way of toning. I don't even remember where I got it.

  • There are some nice toned Peace Dollars on this thread and in my experience those can be hard to find...

Here is a typical leather pouch toned Standing Liberty quarter. I also have a 1924P and a 1928P. All in AU PCGS no problem holders. I actually like this toning over the usual dipped out white crap.
