Nice coin....but I am afraid that fingerprint is there to stay.... unless you take drastic measures such as a vibratory cleaner with fine media....Cheers, RickO

  • Well to be honest there is a one cent also that is available. The seller knows nothing about them they are an inheritance and I am doing the research on them. They are available for me to buy but I need to figure them out. The hole shows metal flow both inside and out side and from both directions it seems.

Center-holed large cents are pretty common. Half cents less so, but they're out there.

  • I understand that other date large and half cents have punches, what FadeToBlack was stating is that this is the year that they made experimental bi-metal coins that were center punched.

Yes, but this is not one of them. It was holed outside the mint, by persons unknown, for some unknown reason. Which does make it rather interesting.

Oftentimes the center-holed large cents were nailed to a roof beam, to bring good luck to a building. Some of them have rectangular holes from the old "square" nails.

This might be something similar. It could have been attached to a beam, or a ship's mast, or something like that.

  • I see yes this date would have square or rectangular nails as they were still being made by hand using metal working hammers or out of long sections of square stock. To have been nailed with one of those nails the hole would exhibit the characteristics of the square shank nail and this coin has none of that. The metal flow from the punch is interesting also I will try to get some pics of the inside of the hole with my microscope. I am off to bed now. Thank you for the ideras and opinions on this coin, I hope we can discuss it more tomorrow (today as it were). I will also see about getting the large cent also for comparison.

Not ALL holed coins from this period had square or rectangular holes.

They had drills back then, too, y'know. In fact, this is a drill job. You can tell by the raised metal around the edges of the hole.

  • yes I know they had drills back then lol What I found interesting was the raised lip on both sides of the coin and the metal flow on the inside of the hole. Speculation on this can run rampant. A drill would not leave the metal looking the way it does on both sides of the coin IMO. I will get some pics of the inside of the hole later. thank you for your opinions.
