I am amazed at how low those statistics are. I must have 15 of them myself, all unattributed.
Compared to 15, there must be hoards of these out in the wild.

It's end of (bank)roll (e.g. EOR) toning. The paper covers one side, hence the toning on one side, while the other side is up against the other Franklins in the roll, so it does not tone up.

That's a Screaming good deal to have gotten a 1956 mint set for $20. Here are two that I got out of a mint set that cost me ~ $170 tax included. I got the gold/red one slabbed, PCGS MS66FBL, and kept the blue one unslabbed for my Dansco album. There were also some very attractive Washingtons in the set.

I'm really loving collecting these older proof sets and coins. I think I got this set so cheap because the pics were so bad but I figured for $20, why not? ha ha. That's almost melt. Yes, the 1956 in my pics is the same one in the holder shown in this link.

I was told it's a CONECA DDO-002 I think? I've thought about sending it in for the hell of it. I've never sent one in before. The pop on this variety is 1 58, 3 MS64, 3 MS65 and 1 MS66. One of the 65's is on Ebay right now and of course my opinion is horribly biased, but I think they're pretty compatible. Then again, bad eyes, biased, first sub, I'd probably be so disappointed I would never make another submission. ha ha. It wasn't just the Franklin that made this a sweet deal, the Washington has serious die cracks on obverse and reverse, lamination error on the Jefferson and die cracks and fills on the Lincoln. $20?? Oh yeah....

Oh, also, I figured the toning came from being exposed to something on one side and not the other but didn't know the chemicals in the paper of the roll could do that. Learning a little more every day! Thanks.

With regards to your "mint set", that is NOT a mint set. Depending on the year, from 1948 - 1963 (which is the period that Franklins were minted), a mint set would contain two or three groups of coins. From 1948 - 1958 these coins would be in 2 or 3 cardboard "cards"; one each representing the Philadelphia, Denver and sometimes the San Francisco mint. From 1959 - 1963 the coins would be in two plastic envelopes. In both the card and envelopes would be TWO examples of each coin from each mint that coin was produced that year. In a 1956 mint set for example you would get 18 coins; 4 Lincolns (2 each from the P & D mint), 4 Jeffersons, 4 Roosevelts, 4 Washingtons and 2 Franklins (since Franklins were only minted in Philadelphia in 1956).

What you have is a partial set that has been put together. I would guess, given the toning of your 5 coins, that the coins were indeed pulled from a mint set, as the toning looks appropriate for that. In any case, for $20 you still did well. I am not a variety collector, so I could not verify the DDO for you.

Here is a picture of the P & D mint cards from my 1956 set. Note that there are no Franklins in the D mint card.

I know it was a put together set, could tell by the wear on the steps of the nickel. ha ha. The pictures made it so ugly no one wanted it. Like Charley Browns Christmas tree. And we ALL know how that turned out.

I live in a fairly dry clime with moderate temperatures, and I only have a few sets these days, so I don't worry too much about just leaving them in a drawer. Most of the really good stuff I've slabbed and the slabs are in a SDB. Here's one I slabbed out of a 1958 set...

Wow that's some great toning.

I live in Reno, which is, well, pretty dry. ha ha. I was just wondering as I have several flat packs and I'm wanting to display them along with other sets in a lighted curio cabinet but there's no "good" way to display a set of coins wrapped in plastic. Basically, I'm contemplating cutting some of the packs open but want to do what I can to be able to display them without sacrificing the coin quality. I've heard of people putting dehumidifiers in cases like that. Want to show them but don't want to mess them up. ha ha.
